Okay guys, I need your help. This will be the second pleco added to my tank. I currently have 1 gibbiceps, a black ghost knife, striped peacock eel and 2 striped Raphaels. My LFS is having a ridiculous sale this weekend for Labor Day and I've been contemplating my next moves around it. I planned on getting the nugget because the Phantom's price was so out of reach but now I will be getting him for very cheap. Which do you guys think is the better choice?? :nilly:

Also what are considered "good prices" for these two.

Thanks and I will post end result and prices paid at the end of the sale.

I would go for the blue phantom myself, as the Gold nuggets supposedly have the reputation of being more sensitive to water conditions. Also, as they get bigger, their yellow spots get smaller, so I feel they are less attractive. Plus they get quite big. The blues stay small. However, I've never owned either, so take my advice for what it's worth.

As for price, ThatPetPlace has blues listed for $50, and the GN for $25. Anything below that (saw $35 to 40 for the blue, $20 for the GN) I think would be a good price.

Oh, and how big is your tank? I would consider getting rid of the Gibby (may be too aggressive for the fancy plecos), unless the tank was really big and you had lots of hiding places.

around here Blues are in the hundreds and GN are 89.99

In the hundreds? Where in God's name in Canada are you? I sell juvie's for under 20 bucks, shoot me a PM anytime.

I would also go with the phantom. GN are great plec's, and I personally think they're more attractive than blue phantoms, but they are far more aggressive (especially during feeding time).

i can get a gn for 30 bucks and im not sure about the blue phantom

You know I've heard that GN's are more aggressive than other plecos, I didn't know how much credit to give it because obviously it depends on individual temperament but I hear it enough that I'm beginning to think other wise. I feed my gibby, who is about 4.5 - 5 inches right now in the same spot of the tank because I am working on getting him to hand feed (and have been successful but only briefly) and was thinking that if I did the same (in attempting to create their own feeding areas) to the next pleco I add, whichever it may be, there wouldn't be a problem...am I wrong? back to temperament? I would love to be able to hand feed the next addition as well and don't mind putting in the time it takes to condition them.

I have a feeling that I'm gunna go with the Phantom if he's still there :D ^^

I would too.
Gold nuggets are very common around here and all though I really liked the one I had he was very territorial to any fish that came within reach.
I love the look of Blue Phantoms and was really contemplating getting one, I mean... What male wouldn't love a blue pleco:D
