Pike Cichlid ID help?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome. Now I know it's a female, and part of the Saxatilis Group.
From what I understand there's 41 different types in this group.
Can anyone ID this Saxatilis?
I'm still looking myself

Where did you get it? Maybe they still have some? In my experience, C. Alta doesn't have a lot of spangling on the body, females even less so. My original thought was C. Alta, but, with no collection information, it is really hard to say what it may be. The main character that I based my opinion on was almost completely the humeral spot, more precisely the high position of it on the body. I don't recall seeing another Saxatilis type with red tear marks below the eye either. I have no idea what C. Cardiostigma is, making an ID off of a photo in a book published years ago is risky at best. I have lost faith in most of the books out there, they are all prone to errors, the internet is no better, perhaps even worse.

She is a beauty, but, if you are looking to breed pikes, PLEASE make sure that you are not creating hybrids!!!!!! As you can see, there are enough problems with ID's as it is :D

Not trying to cause problems, just like to make sure people aren't jumping to conclusions is all.

I dont know but SHE looks goooooood !!!!!

My first thought was Cr. saxatilis, or Cr. anthurus, looking at it thought it definitely has some strong alta traits. The red suborbital triangle, and the humeral blotch centered on the lateral line definitely point in that direction.

Not sure if Cr. cardiostigma is considered a seperate species or perhaps a subspecies/variant of alta. Haven't really seen to many pictures of them, and they are discovering new species so frequently, there is no telling what they have reclassified things as anymore. Have to agree with Ray on the whole book aspect.

Either way she is one heck of a beautiful little lady! Do you have more?

If I have more pics, unfortunately no, my parents were visiting my brother and that's all he took.. If you mean by more Pikes? that's the only one he has.

In the spring he's letting me take everything..
It's too bad, he had the chance to buy the male when purchasing the femalell, but instead purchased another cichlid.

I'm hoping to find a male. If not then I plan on selling her and getting a another pair. A pike with awesome colors. I honestly do not want to get ride of her.
