Anybody ever have to kill these tubeworm flies? I don't know what they really are but they're probably my own dang fault for doing so much wild collecting. Anyway, my pleco eats them but they are in every crevice and in my top filter. I've manually removed most of them but since they are now in all my tanks I really don't stand a chance of eliminating every single one in the house. Adults would just lay eggs again anyway. So...fishsafe insecticide anyone?

Like these, http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/Tank_critters2.shtml I guess they are midgeflies...

tough one.

the only time I have ever seen these in an aquarium was on a friends tank who was doing water changes regularly but not gravel vacumming. the chironomids were living in the detritus in the gravel and hatching from there. you would open up the lid of his tank and midge flies would fly out LOL.

the problem disappeared after I showed him a gravel vac etc.

where do the larvae seem to be congregating?

I would think if you can eliminate the detritus that they feed on you can eliminate the blood worms.

are you keeping up with regular maintainence etc?

these worms do tend to live in detritus. in wastewater treatment, we get them living in the filter media of the wastewater plant filters.

I have a feeling your best defense is a bit more TLC on your tanks (to eliminate the detritus where they thrive) and they should go away.

You suggestion makes sense but I'd hate to wipe out all my precious algae. I've been growing it for so long and it's really stable and happy.

Unfortunately I'd have to do a water change every other day to get any cleaner. My tanks are so understocked and underfed it's a joke. They must be making their tubes out of algae and suspended fine particulates. I like my algae. But perhaps some safe algaecide might help, huh?
If I clean the algae off the back and sides of my tanks it will migrate to the front panel. That's why I let it have its way on all non-viewing surfaces.

It's not like there's much actual fish poo around to build with. I remove it all the time. They actually seem to generate their own brand of gray mucus. My topfilter has just become infested and they took hold at the return to the tank. There's nothing visible in the water at that point. I've never even had to clean that spot much because no muck ever makes it that far. Seems like they are able to take fine particulate matter and convert it into building proteins. My nitrates are always below 20ppm so there's not much to work with on that front. TDS stays low, too, since that's how I control my nitrAtes.

I'll bet I could cook them away. I wonder what their top temperature is? Probably higher than my fish. :( They also seem to do best in strong current (filter feeding, of course) but there's not much I can do to maintain filtration and stifle current at the same time.

Well, for now I'll try to redistribute my plecos as part of the battle. Maybe the snails, too. Tanks with snails do not accumulate significant populations of the larvae.

Until then, don't tell my wife it's not flies from the Christmas tree or I'll get an earful.

Good suggestions. The two tanks in my house most heavily habitated are both barebottom and clean of most debris.

My 55g has gravel but also has a jurupari and an army of aufwuchs feeders so that might be keeping them at bay in there.

My 75 is bare as bare can be yet is the most visibly afflicted. I guess I can bid my algae farewell and remove all the little buggers in one fell swoop. It's that the algae there is so settled in and stable that it doesn't even spread anymore. After I nuke it it will be all over everything again. Oh well.

My 125 is the most newly colonized tank. They are only existing in areas that the pleco can't get to like in the biological filtration and under rocks. We'll have to keep brainstorming on that one.

More to say, wife need 'puter...

*Yes, I am removing all visible worms!
