Does anybody have experience with this fish. My LFS has 1 and I'm interested in it but would like to hear from anybody that has kept that fish in a tropical tank. Can it be trained onto prepared foods and how fast will it grow.

BUY IT! (how much do they want?)
I have one that is about 18" and it begs for food like a dog. I keep it in tropical conditions and it does very well. It's with a silver arowana, clown knives, oscar, jag, and a small pleco.
It took me a while to get it on prepared food, but after its first taste of shrimp it was hooked!
They are very passive, but have massive mouths so be careful what you put in with it.
They do grow very quickly as well. Maximum size is 24" from what I've read, but I can say that I've never seen one bigger than mine (I'm sure there is one out there though)
There is only a handful of people who have these fish, so I would latch onto it :grinyes:

It's still a baby at about 2" in length.
They want $19.99 for it. I have no idea if the price is good or bad since this is the first time that I saw that fish available.

I think I might get it and keep it for a while in a planted 80 gallon tank and then I can upgrade into a 180 gallon CA cichlid tank or just sell it again.

If it was my LFS, I'd get it. I love these fish.

I would get it. 20 bucks is a far price for that size. I have one about 10" and he eats everything. He will eat out of my hand or should I say engulf out of my hand. I heard that sometimes they carry a parasite on them when shipped and when they get to a certain size they start breathing very hard and die. My friend lost 4 to unknown reasons and mine is from the same batch and is doing fine? One thing you do have to watch is overfeeding. These guys will gorge themselves to death. Good luck.

How fast is yours growing ultimatejay?

i am interested in the growth rate as well.

this is a fish i have wanted for awhile now, and it appears a lfs in calgary has some available. would a 75g work as a suitable growout until dec assuming the fish is 5" or less?
tankmates would pretty much be ca/sa cichlids throughout. the perch should hold its own, correct?

hope this isn't considered a 'derail', but these two questions are really the only reasons i haven't caught one myself over the last two weeks. more info/experiences please!

Be careful. My perch wont defend himself. He's a big dope that loves everyone. I came in the door one day to see my vieja fenestratus beating the life out of the perch and he just took it. He healed up very quickly, but a fish that was about 1/2 his total size threw him a pretty serious beating.

He has gone from about 4" to 10" in about 3 months in my 240g. I just put him into my 750 last week and he loves it in there and I expect an even more rapid growth rate now. He is doing great in the 750 with my dats and barramundi. They all swim together and come right up to the front of the tank and beg like little puppies. I really like my chinese perch. Definitely one of my favorite fish. Great color and pattern and great personality. Like you said a big dope that won't harm any other fish it can't swallow and they will try.
