Hi everyone,

I built this tank before I became a member. I just want to know how long it will last. I know that a lot of people have tried this method but I have very limited options when it comes to sealing. I live in a small island where the proven sealers are not available. If I order it the shipping alone will knock me off my seat. I made 2 identical tanks. The other will serve as a backup just in case the first one fails. If it fails, I will try to figure out what went wrong and make corrections. I spent around $170.00 on both tanks excluding the glass which I got for free. I know basic carpentry but a total newbie when it comes to fishkeepng. I got the ideas by reading MFK forums and decided to be a member and share this project and learn more from you. I'd be happy if I can get at least 3 years out of my build. I promise to update on the status of this tank every six months. It has been running for 2 months now. Pls. note that this only serves as a "holding tank" if you will. All inhabitants esp the scat (brackish) and hi-fin loach (pond) will be moved to an appropriate environment when their ready. I'm open to suggestions so pls. feel free to comment. So here it is:

Absolutely. Just let me know when you're ready. MFK has been a big influence on this build even before I became a member. :)

What kind of wood did you use?

Materials list would be cool! Any notes on the build as well. THings of concern or leasons learned....?

Materials:

1 ea. 4' x 8' x 3/4" Birch plywood (kinda smooth bec that was the only available plywood at that time but on my second build I was able to get the Douglas Fir plywood..the one w/c is of rough texture with more pronounced grains on it).

1 pound of 2" course thread outdoor deck screws

16 ounce Titebond III waterproof wood glue

1 gal. Drylok water-based masonry waterproofer

3 tubes GE Silicone 1 Windows and Doors

Screws were spaced 3" apart. On my second build I just bought the plywood and silicone because there was enough materials left.

My concern would be how long the Drylok would bond to plywood because it was meant to be used on concrete basements and fish ponds. Lesson I learned is it's better to use the tip of plastic spoon to even out the silicone. That way it will look better and not messy compared to using a finger. I might put a background next time because the brown algae buildup on the Drylok is not pleasing to the eyes. Everything was bought at my local Home Depot. I can only wish that this build will last bec I can't get what the other builders are using on their DIYs locally. Thank you everyone for the nice comments. :)

3 tubes of silicone ? where did you use that ?

any problems with the tank ?

I used the silicone to seal the glass and seams. Tank is still ok so far.

how long ago did you fill up the tank ?

why did you silicone the seams ?

saw your thread and decided to drylok a tank myself hence all the questions.
