I just setup my SunSun/Perfect HW-404B, 530 gph (the new upgraded model from the HW-304B). I was able to fit 3 filter pads in the bottom basket and 4 liters of matrix and one more filter pad in the upper baskets. The canister fired up right away with just a few pumps of the priming pump, really easy. For the money ($100 shipped) these filters seem like a good buy. Also they are dead silent. Here is a pic:

I have actually just started looking for a canister filter for a 100+ gallon tank for $100 or less. How would this compare in quality to the higher priced filters? Like Eheim? Does it have any drawbacks?

I have not heard one bad thing about these filters. I think where they fall a bit short is on efficiency, this one is 50 watts where a fluval or eheim would be 35-40 watts.

Where did you buy yours from?

It seems to me that the argument could be made that for the mony you would spend on a comparable "high end" filter, you could buy two of these and keep one in the closet as a spare if it ever went down.

keep us updated.I hear mixed reviews

I have not heard a bad thing about these particular filters. Sure they don't have the track record but if you are on a budget you can get the older model with sponges, bio balls, ceramic rings and charcoal for $100 shipped. Not bad for a big 530 gph canister. Sure I would like to get a eheim or fluval but with 2 kids and a wife not working these buget choices are nice.

Same here about being on a budget with 3 kids and a wife here. I have the HW-303A and it's a really good canister filter. I do like that little built in handle on the newer ones. Much built like one of those Marineland C-Series canister filters. I will buy one of those HW-404 like yours here in the near future. These are awesome filters that will not break your wallet like the way over priced ones plus works very well and never heard anything bad about them here either.
