Hey guys, anyone noticed the sticky section getting crowded lately? haha anyways, was thinking about reshuffling it and since several members have been talking about, i thought i'd get all your opinions on how to organise the stickies.

currently we have 10 stickies. here's how i'm thinking of regrouping them. comments, feedback and ideas are welcome!

Basic Discussions

Thread 1: Introduction/Basics to gar, to include:

Advanced Discussions

Thread 1: The untimate gar captive care guide, to include:

  • "what gar is right for me" flowchart
  • Generic information (applicable to all 7 species)
    • Gars & Tanksizes - especially juvenile gars (http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=401018)
    • Gar & Feeding (what to feed, how often to feed, how to convert off live)
    • Gars & tankmates - brief intro + link to the tankmate thread)
    • Water changes (how much to change, how often to change)
    • Tank set up (water current, decor)
    • Breeding & sexing gars
  • Species specific information (broken down into 2 genus, similar to the current captive care guide)
    • scientific name
    • common name
    • distribution
    • description
    • avg captive size
    • avg growth rate
    • suggested tank size for adult fish
    • species specific comments
Thread 2: Gar TANKMATES - Share your experiences

Thread 3: Gar IDENTIFICATION

  • Pictorial ID guide
  • Link to Gar quizzes thread (the clean one)
  • ID your gar here
MISC

Thread 1: MFK GARMY - Report Thyne Gar

Would definitely clean up the stickies and make for an easy to follow step by step intro to gars.

Just a comment on the gar and tanksizes thread. In there it mentions for adult gars (above 18") that 1-2 ft for the height of the enclosure is fine. Perhaps there should be a note about larger gars (gators, cubans, longnoses) that have the potential to grow a lot bigger than 18" should be provided with more height as they grow.

hi xander,

i will comment further on this when i get more time, but this is a good start. as usual, thanks for your efforts in keeping the gar forum one of the most advanced (which is ironic given the phylo placement of our fishes) on MFK.

if we can create links to sections within the same thread, i think that would be useful...therefore you could take your divisions above and turn them into basically 3 major pinned topics. within those pinned topics (in the actual thread), you could have a variety of sections and people can read through them following the basic outline you have above.

i think cutting it down to 3 major pinned topics will clean things up quite a bit (they will of course be expansive threads once you are in them), and HOPEFULLY people will actually read them. if not, we can just keep up with the annoying and tedious habit of referring people to them...but i find it's better to do that then have the forum cluttered with the same questions asked over and over again (IMO).

furthermore, i would call the sections "Basic Information" and "Advanced Information" as opposed to "Discussions" as these pinned topics would likely be closed (or at least most of them) as you have kept them before. discussions could be kept more in open forum. specific "ID my gar" threads would of course remain open, as would likely the Garmy thread.

again, just some relatively random thoughts/suggestions--

hahaha, thanks. got the idea from you guys and after finding many of the stickies repetitive.

do you mean something like this?

currently im naming 5 major pinned topics

  1. basic info (closed)
  2. "mega thread" (closed)
  3. tankmates-share yr experience (open)
  4. gar identification (open)
  5. garmy (open)
what was your idea when you thought of cutting it down to 3 pinned topics? imo 5 is pretty concise due to the fact that there are 3 open threads that (imo) should not be merged to prevent confusion.

furthermore, i would call the sections "Basic Information" and "Advanced Information" as opposed to "Discussions" as these pinned topics would likely be closed (or at least most of them) as you have kept them before. discussions could be kept more in open forum. specific "ID my gar" threads would of course remain open, as would likely the Garmy thread.

in green, also, any input from other members will also be appreciated!

in short, i think your 5 would work...hadn't quite figured out how the 3rd in my 3 would work, but i think that 5 would be doable. so essentially the following:

1- Basic Gar information
2- Advanced Gar information

next 3 are a cluster of open threads, but still pinned:
3- Gar ID
4- Gar Tankmates thread
5- Garmy thread

the last 3 are obviously more dynamic in nature than the first two, but the first two are stronger references and would only be updated with essential/useful info as opposed to discussion.

oh wait, we also need a pinned topic that simply reads (in the subject line) "Your gar is a FLORIDA gar" :P --

started making some changes, let me know what you guys think!

+1 Solomon already noted and mentioned all that I would have to this point, so I'll reserve comment until something comes up.
