so cal and singapore
So about 2-3 weeks ago my convict had their first spawn. Their frys became free swimming for more than a week now. The 2 cons have been taking care of their fry until yesterday... The male started attacking the female and he didnt let her near the eggs. She isnt eating the frys either. When i took out the male, she continued taking care of frys. :confused:so why is the male suddenly attacking the female and not letting her near the babies? Is there a way to stop this?

but he isnt killing the fry... Almost killed the girl, now she is in a holding net in the tank recovering. Will they get together again? How soon do you think they'll be together again?

The males will test the females to see if they're fit enough to breed. They do this to ensure that the offspring are parented by the best, so to speak. Doing this helps strengthen their species as a whole. Its compleatly normal. Males will often do this to females when there getting ready to breed again, even if they have already in the past. Provide plenty of hiding spaces for the female so she isn't getting chased constantly. If you don't he will likely kill her in the process.

They will most likely breed again. Once the chasing starts the breeding usually follows within 3-5 days. Good luck, and remember to provide hiding places. The females life is in your hands. ;)

yeah..from what i have read this seems normal...

my cons are opposite..my female is tailess...and beats the male up and does not allow him near her eggs...when they are free swimming she will allow him close to the fry but she is sooo mean to him and he is bigger!.

strange little fish...^_^

my ignorant father thought the female con recovered enough n let her out of the holding net... Now shes worst. She cant balance herself properly n has torn skin, fins ... She sometimes goes belly up. She is breathing fast too. The tank has 5 hiding spots but he goes everywhere she goes! They r the only fishes in the 40 gallon btw... Now what shd i do? She is in those net breeder tanks in the tank now. Will she survive'

cons are touch little guys, keep the water clean and keep her away from him!!
keep her in the box or move her to a hospital tank. lots of clean water will help her..not sure on meds i am new with cons..someone should chime in who knows more.

:( hope she is ok.

Thanks. Unfortunately i dont have a hospital tank... But she is protected from the male now. Would using regular salt affect the fry?
