My jaguar cichlid pair wich i seperated with a divider for about
a month i have taken the divider away this morning to see if things would be cool,
there was some following around, lip locking, body shaking, (wich i filmed) i have
put them back the way they were (i put the divied back to sperate them) becuase i
wanted you guys to watch the video and see if i should leave the divider out (and
the behaviour was spawning/breeding behaviour) or move the male to a tank of his own
(it was fighting behaviour). *awaiting your reply.

divider still out female not dead :) though the male nudges her a bit... shes not retaliating,
she just takes it... anything i can do to indice spawning ? baught them as a proved couple,
the tank they came out of had a swarm of fry in there. Ppl with jags please share your wisdom,
or others thanks.

Tank specs :

tank: 100gallon
temp: 26.9-27c
PH: 7.0
ammonia: 0 mg/l
nitrite: 5.0 mg/l
nitrate: 0 mg/l

Thanks all so much...

i watched 5 minutes of the video  and i see aggresive fighting not any spawning body laungage like shimmering or posative color displays.:nilly: I think u should put the divider back in and wait till the female is swollen with eggs and showing her sex organ then release the male and watch them closely for more posative spawnig behavior. If that goes south see if they will spawn threw the divider also ask the people u got them from about their past spawing behavior if it was that aggresive i have a pair myself and their spawnig is much more peaceful:D but mabey u got some real intence jags are the wild caught ?

i have put the divider back in ATM, how do i condition the female to make her swollen with eggs ? i'm not sure if they are wild or not, but they were purchased as a proven pair... anything else i can do ? thanks.

Just feed her well... frozen or fresh bloodworm usually does the trick.

That is definetly spawning behaiour. FIns erect...posturing...anal nudging...

Keep the divider in giving the female 1/3 of the tank and the male the rest. They will (as indicated by Big Train) spawn right through the dvider. What I would do is cut a a couple holes in the divider that are large enough for her to get through, but not him. Put a spawning site on both her side and the males side. Make sure both sites are close to the divider. Cut the holes at different levels of the divider (high/mediu/low). THe reason is that you don't want the female pinned and unable to get to the sole hole in the fence.

The best way to induce spawning is to do a large (75%) water change and then bump up the temperature of the tank. You may have to do this a couple times. HDon't worry about making the water going into the tank to be the exact temp as the water coming out. Just make sure it's not cold..tepid is OK. Let the water warm up over time.

The behaviour you are seeing (and I only watched the first three or four minutes...all I nede to see) is typical. The breeding fish will often open their mouth and shake like that. It's been supposed that they are actually making noise underwater to enhance the mating process. The anal nudging is also part of the process.

Most important is to kep that divider up. While it may not happen while you are watching, it generally happens quick and when you are not. Better not to take a chance on a fatality. What I do generally is that when the eggs are laid I seperate the two fish. I have found that's when any real aggression might start. And DEFINETLY once you remove the fry...for a period of time both fish will be more inclined to hurt each other.

Keep both fish well fed before and during breding. The additional energy required to accomplish th task has to be supported by the right amount (and kind) of food.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

thanks everyone, cool. i was checking out the female today ,and she is not big in the belly area, does the have to be to have eegs ? if not shouold i just feed her live blood worms ?? to condition her up ? oh and AqMo i've seen your parachromis fish ...very nice !

u should feed her some earthworms/nightcrawlers also shrimp and hikari makes a vitamen enriched bloodworm cubes that will fatten her up quick.I only have jag spawning expierence with my pair and they are more gentle than yours but they have also been together since they where 2" so thats why i said they where fighting instead of spawning the male looked like he was striking or hiting female pretty hard to me:WHOA: but AQUAMOJO says thats a anal nudge so i guess mojo has seen spawning traits of different pairs and seen different things so i would go with what mojo said i guess your pair is into rough sex:D haha good luck.

Well, I just want to ask some questions? 1st, did they pair at a young( small) or larger size? Did you have many to begin with until a pair took place? I have had mine for about3-4months at ~1.5-2" (6 of them) and they finally paired up at ~4-5". At first, two were fighting. I thought they were males but it turned out that they were male/females. I then put a clay pot into the tank...they then started to defending the pot. Thats when I knew they were a pair. They never fought anymore but always defending their pot. Male/females takes turn charging at the others...I'm suprised that yours is still fighting? I bought these from an old man who breeds them. He still has the male and female together..their not fighting even in/not the present of fries. He said that the secret is to get a bunch of them and let them pair up..it'll be long term...So far, it's working..GL w/ yours!!!

hey goku

i'm not sure if they were paired 'as young' as i bought them as a saposably 'proven pair' so i never had them when they were young.... my plan now is to condition the female untill i see she is fat with eggs, then put the two together becuase it seems the male is always up for it, but she is not 'with eggs' or ready to spawn. any ideas ???
