The Real Norcal
I saw these little guys (about 1") at my lfs and he said they came in with the assorteds and he had no idea what they were (a new guy not the owner).

I suspected them of being D.compressiceps but said nothing of the sort,I asked him how much and he gave them to me both for $5 and a cigarette........:headbang2

the downside is if they arent eye biters than they are probably just some fish that I really dont want in my african setup, and they arent to attractive yet.

so here they are, getting the check out from my brichardi, peacocks, and calvus .....weird set-up I know but they are all babies I think it will work because IME with eye biters they are only predatory not all that aggressive...they may even join in all the peacock games.....

When they grow up the brichardi Calvus will fit in their mouths so be prepared to seperate them once they hit 5-6 in.

sweet,so I got a pretty good deal,no?If they both wind up female no biggy,I wont be out anything really.
but theres two so Ive got a 50% chance of winding up with a male,eh?
do you guys really think theyll snack on the calvus?
the last time I kept these guys mine got to about 9" and no blue so I guess all three were female but they had never eaten the smaller fish they were in with (jewel cichlid, johanni, acei, and actually brichardi....) just market shrimp, blood worms, and african flake food.
by what length should I see color in a male?

sometimes fish are given lots of hormones to develop color early so they sell better. If that was the case for these fish you would have seen the color when you got them. Then the color would fade (if you never given them hormones) and then come back when they mature. If they have not been given hormones I do not believe that at a small size they would show the color to identify male or female.... hope that is explained better...:nilly:

oh I see what your saying now,but what I meant was if one is a male, when(at what length) would I klnow? from what I can find it seems males start t color up at like 4"?is there any way to tell before that length?

go buy some color enhancing gel that they eat. It will help speed up when. If you feed it to them often they will show sooner. Or read how to sex them my looking at the sex part of the fish. Like on most cichlids you flip them over and look near the anal fin for the holes. if it is the same I will tell you how...
