the following is the framing plan for my new 75 gal tank I want to put my 40 gal under it.

I will use 2x4 lumber for the framing.

specificly look at the span above the 40 gal tank, do you think that i can get away with 2x4's or should i use 2x6's, I want as much distance between the top of the 40 gal and the framing support of the 75 gal as i can get.

thanks

Use some 4x4 for the frame and then beef it up with 2x4. Like make the mian supports and/or legs out of the 4x4 then everything else out of the 2x4s

i think it will be fine
if they can build stands out of pressed board and they hold the weight than yous should be more than enough

looks great.
make sure you have the load on the ends of the stand, not the center.

your center bracing shouldn't support the tank.

this is an exaggerated drawing of what I mean.

edit:
the top is a bad stand

the bottom is correct stand

I get you, I am not concerned with getting a crown in the framing of the 75 gal support frame but rather will the corner support all that weight, i believe that it will, just wanted to run this by some people who may have built a similer set up.

both tanks will sit on a piece of 3/4" plywood, the 2x4 frameing will be "fared", my 125gal tank stand was built using this method and the top was less than 1/16" out of level in 6'.

this gives you an idea of how the framing will look, with only the end support on the right.

chad55,

i have very limited space to work with here, the whole thing has to be only 59" long, to accomidate the lower tank and the filters i cant use 4x4's (i had origionaly planned on doing that for the right support column). as it is i will have less than 1/4" of room to get the filters and tank in place. (well through the doors)

the real question here is load verses that 2x4 leg on the front right corner. It does have a 1/2" plywood skin on that side which will add to stability, but it will not help with the wieght.

thanks guys, i am thinking that it will work, it will be a few weeks before i build it

We tend to overbuild here on MFK, but when size is important then you certainly can go with smaller dimensioned materials. Milkman has a 400+ gallon tank on a 2x4 stand so you have nothing to worry about (but not for people in earthquake prone areas).

No...WE have hurricanes, you get the leftovers :D I put that in for the people on the other side of the country, not us. They read this stuff too sometimes.;)

Great design and quality build but you could of easily cut your costs in half.... that stand is big time over kill.

If there was an earthquake or hurricane or....... nuclear holocaust i'd be in the foetal position under that stand! ;)
