Is your tank planted? Although excess nitrates are undesired, a baselevel is required for successful plant growth. I would be greatly interested in its compatibility with planted tanks.

Yes my tank is planted. Mostly anubias.

The use of biohome does not interfere with plant growth.
Plants have an order of preference when it comes to absorbing nutrients.
First is free ammonia, then nitrites , then Nitrates. They consume what is
easier first, and ammonia is easiest. Ultimately, good water quality is the
key to success. Biohome helps achieve that. Excess nitrates is not good even
for planted tanks.
 
Sounds pretty nice. How much did it run you? Is it in a sump or a canister?
 
I use cell pore from kent in my pond and it also removes nitrates pretty well. I have a huge bio load and my nitrates never go above 15 ppm. Actually I use seachem bio matrix in my 80 gallon and since I keep it fully submerged all of the time it has anaerobic bacteria on it which handles the nitrates very well in that tank while I have bio wheels for the aerobic bacteria. The nitrates never get above 10 ppm. I only do water changes about once a month. I have read almost any bio media will colonize with anaerobic bacteria and will help with nitrates as long as it is fully sunmerged. Although I also read it is a very slow process compared to the aerobic cycle. If you have a high bio load it can not keep up with the nitrates.
 
I am familar with cellpore. I used to carry it also.
There are a few points that I didn't like about cellpore.
- It is very fragile and breaks very easily.
If you ever try to clean it after about 6 months of use, you will understand
what I mean.
- Second it is too porous so oxygenated water travels through it to fast to
allow sufficent time for denitrafication.
- Third, cellpore isn't cheap, and over time it disintegrates, so eventually
you will need to buy more.

I used to be a very big fan of cellpore until I discovered Biohome.
Due to the fact that less is required to achieve the same results and it won't
disintegrate on me over time.

I don't mind spending more money on something that will last and works too.

Since I don't know your exact bioload and how heavily you feed, I recommend 2-3kgs.
You should put it in the last chamber of your wet dry sys. They need to be fully submerged and NO AIR injection. Nitrate is removed in an anaerobic environment.
Depending on your flow rate, Oxygen is consumed by the aerobic bacteria in the early stages of filtration, so the less oxygenated the water when in reachs the biohome, the more effective it will be.
