I have another inquirery for the expert:) . I have always thought of the Payara as the holy grail of fish just take one look at a 40 pounder! I always thought that they got huge, even in the aquarium, but I think I might have come across it somewhere saying that some species stay small. Is it true? What species are there and what size would they attain in the home aquaria? what tank size would they need? Are they aggressive? and which species are hardy, I wouldn't want to buy one and have it die from the 12 inch "death syndrome." Thanks again for any help guys you are the best:headbang2

Scombs are they common payara and they max out around 12". They are very prone to ick and those are the ones that usually die around the 12" mark, if not before. Redtails and armatus will get large in a home aquarium. Armatus can reach about 2-3ft in a hope aquarium if housed properly. Redtails will get about 2ft if not a little less. Redtails and armatus are a lot hardier, aggressive, and nicer to look at. Armatus are expensive, redtails ar not so bad in price. Definately would get redtails over scombs anyday. Do a search on "redtail payara" and "armatus", and you'll find out a lot more information.

Endli, or Ornate, Maybe a Clown Knife, Maybe some Indo Tarpon, Swordspine Snook, Johanna or Cobra Pike, And 4 Dats be o.k.? Talk about a HUGE:WHOA: bioload:) . Thanks again for the help.

Depending on where you live and who has them maybe $50-$80 a piece. Those prices range from lfs to online seller. With my experience with redtails and armatus, make sure that your tank mates can take a beating! Redtails are agro and armatus are even more agro. Also make sure your tank mates aggression matches that of the redtail/armatus. Nothing too aggressive. GL!:D

I have a redtail payara (H. Tatauaia) and it seems to be very hardy and powerful. My LFS had it for $50. Here is a couple of shots of the bad boy:D

nice payara rallysman:headbang2 . Wow 50-80 I thought it would be a couple hundred a piece. I definatly am putting them on the top of my list now:D . Thanks for the help guys

no problem bro. I think the redtails would be fine with your tankmate selection. Just keep an eye out for any cichlids though, pike or any other. They have a lot more bulk stuffed into a more compact package. Payara's are a lot leaner and have less muscle mass. The other tankmates aren't too overly aggressive, so they should be fine. Oh, but no clown knife though. They can be aggressive and they grow a lot faster than the redtails. If you're going to get multiple redtails, you should have a larger tank. They can be aggressive towards eachother. Good luck bro. Keep us posted.

How would I go about acclimating a 5-6" redtail payara? I want to make sure it's a perfect acclimation. and is it safe to put melafix/pimafix, and jungle lab parasite tablet in the tank? If so when should I b4 or after he's in the tank? Thanks again for the great info guys hopefully I'll have one in a few days:D :naughty:

I have used melafix on my redtail with amazing results.
