This is the hystrix I just picked up a couple days ago and it looks as though his tail is slowly rotting. A piece fell off yesterday and the white end is the new piece that seems to be rotting. what could it be and what do I do to treat it?

It is a common mistake to call Humerosa'a Hystrix, & in your case it seems to be textbook. Make sure to add some salt, you do not need to flood the tank with salt, just a bit should help... You might not be able to do much to stop it. I have had many rays show up with bad tails & a small piece will fall off. How big is your tank & how often & how much do you change your water.... This will also play a factor in the rays recovery.

ah yes i was wondering about the whole hystrix thing. thanks for clearing it up for me. as for the tank its a 180 gallon (6x2x2) and I do two weekly waterchanges of about 30-40%. BTW, I will add some salt like you say thanks for the help

go buy some non iodized salt and water change daily!! at least 20% wc. the salt can be bought from any grocery store

Can you really use just any salt?? Ive always used the Aquarium salt. that would be crazy.
