What is the best way to set up a spraybar? Do I want the output pointing:

1) Straight across
2) Downward
3) Upward?

Same question applies for a powerhead.

I have a 55 with some clown loaches and a FH if that makes a difference.

TIA

Depends on what you want. Straight across will bring the current around the tank, and will also have some surface agitation. Down is usually used in planted tanks, and will have no surface movement. Up is for having higher agitation. The choice is yours.

So general consensus is slightly up since I have no plants. What about for getting the poop stirred up. Perhaps have the powerhead pointed down so it pushes it across?

For the detritus, just have a powerful powerhead, with a wide nozzle output on the bottom of the tank pointed towards the intake of the canister. This will help push all the detritus to the filter for removal.

What do you recommend for a 55? I have a Seio M620, but I fear that might be too strong. I was thinking a MaxiJet 1200.

I use a Rio 10HF in my 135, which is rated at 660gph at 1 foot of head pressure. It has no head pressure. You might consider an AC, as they are very good powerheads.

I prefer straight accross n the surface as you get maximum water agitation and water current. My 530g/ph internal filter has a normal round outlet but I made my own spray bar to fit on it. Works a treat and actually filters better. Fish are happier.
