Armatus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a very nice expensive fish that grows big so you will need a big tank for them because they love swimming i heard 250 for a fish and they are mean so watch out with tankmates

I would think big. At least 300g or so for one. They grow pretty rapidly but you could start with a smaller tank and work up to the big tank. They don't do well in groups, so keep them only one per tank. Also watch keeping other silver colored fish with them. Also supposed to be pretty hard to get off of live food, but sure it can be done and has been done by R1.

i just tried to put a silver aro w mine and my armatus beat the crap out of him. armatus is still the sweetest fish ive ever owned. he gets along w rays with no problems.

I heard 1 armatus could fit in a 180 which is same as 300g but not as long

I was thinking ray and armatus

Arnt they hard to get?

yeah but armatus get long and really big they need alot of swimming space and they are very hard to get and very expensive

300g is 8'x30" foot print.. standard 180g is 6'x2'

The 300g is a good bit bigger even though it doesn't look like it on paper. And yeah they are hard to get. You could put one in a 180g for a while. But IMO after 18" ish there should be a upgrade.

The biggest armatus I know of is in a 6x2 footprint tank (the tank is over 3' high though). It's around 2' and seems okay in the tank, albeit a little cramped.

A 180 would be fine for a long time, and if it's still alive when it's time to upgrade and you're still enjoying keeping the fish ... well then you have an excuse to treat yourself to a bigger tank! :D

An Armatus will peg 18 inches in less than 2 years if kept properly. I have one in a 180 and it will get a bigger tank at 12 inches. Payara are very skiddish. So a small tank is fine if you want them toothless. Fullgrown Armatus I wouldn't go any less than 1000. I have payara that are 8-9 inches and were recently put in the 180 due to them freeking out in a 125.

You want the holy grail of payara then treat it like that. Don't be cramping it.

To the best of my knowledge there is still far less than 100 Armatus in the US. It took me from Dec to about 3 weeks ago to get one. It wasn't cheap. Good luck.

DB is right, the bigger the tank the better. ive only had armatus for 3 or 4 months and he went from 4 inches to 9. my 140 is getting too small
