I bought this Craftsman tool chest from my neighbor for $40...

I promptly traded that tool chest for the above tank and sump. Big deal, you might say, right? Well the tank is 220 gallons (72" long x 24" wide x 30" tall). I still can't believe it.

I have a couple of questions. First, the tank is drilled with a center overflow. To me, this takes up a lot of space and viewing area. Is there an easy way for me to move the overflow to the back wall of the tank? When I say easy, I mean without drilling more holes.

What I was thinking (and tell me if this is a good idea or not) would be to put a pvc 90 degree elbow on the bulkhead and then attach a straight piece of pvc to go towards the back wall of the tank. I guess I would then drill 3 1" holes in the bottom of the overflow box (that will have been siliconed to the back wall of the tank) and run the pvc into the overflow box.

The pipes would then be covered by substrate and become invisible. The overflow box would be on the back wall and not in the way of swimming fish or my viewing pleasure. Does this sound doable? Is there another way of accomplishing what I want? Are there any potential problems I'm not thinking of?

As always, any and all help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated. And thanks for this great forum (but look what I've become, my name is terd ferguson and I'm a monsterfishkeeping addict:D ). Thanks again.:)

I don't about that. If it were me, I'd leave well enough alone. If you paint the back of the tank black, the overflow will blend in much better. $40 is STEAL for that tank and wet/dry btw. Now you just need a stand.

I agree just use it the way it is, or you will just run into problems... as suggested just paint the back black and then it wont stand out, and it really wont bother your fish...

Your concept could potentially work.. You would have to make a custom overflow box for the back, and a really tall turn-pipe.. You would also need something to hold down the piping as it would be rickity at that size and length and if it wobbles it will leak or crack your tank. Support it really well and make sure your overflow box and all of that plumbing is nice and sturdy.

if you think it will detract from viewing make it a a inwall fishtank with viewing from bothe sides or just build a stand and conopy and put it in the midd of a room or somthing, like to block off somthing like a computerdesk or other from the rest of the room.

Wow nice trade. I agree paint it black and you will see how good it looks when you're done. Keep the pix comming of progress.

Thanks everyone. I guess, for now, the overflow is staying where it is. I've been cleaning the tank today. It was pretty nasty. I still have to bolck off two holes. It's drilled with 5, 3 in the overflow and two outside it. I'll use silicone and 4" squares of 3/8" glass. Before I can do that I have to completely clean it and so on, etc..

I remember when I thought my 55 and 54 corner were big tanks.:D

great deal on that tank
