As long as the pump is the OEM model that came with the 2260/2262 filter, it can be used either submerged or external. However, it won't have the strainer cover on the intake end of the pump, just the elbow fitting that connects to the filter lid.

For quick reference, the 1260/1262 pump will have that model (type) number when bought singly or if someone replaced the original pump. On an OEM 2260/2262 filter, the pump model (type) will be 2260/2262 to reflect it is part of the filter assembly.

Im gonna check the pump later to make sure its the oem model but yes it was the pump originally purchased with the filter. I could always just rig something up to make a strainer for it.

If you make or buy a strainer, make sure there are enough slots or holes so the pump isn't starved of water. If you want to buy the OEM intake grille, the part # is7268109 and the coarse filter is #2615600.
