Geophagus are generally the least aggressive SA, but not my experience with Geo iporangensis, a dwarf cousin of brasiliensis. Mine is picking fight with every tankmate of equal size and dominate over tough Cryptoheros species. I have two of them, but I have to separate them as they showed excessive con specific aggression until the weaker one lost an eye from fighting. The one eyed Jack has not lost its aggression, still picking fight with tankmates.

But he is prettiest in aggressive mode, with color intensified in fighting.

Mine were the same way, the dominant male would chase my nice and syn all over my 240g. I kept mine at 79 degrees, I remember duanes saying they are subtropical and kept his at cooler temp where they behaved peacefully .

Well, Geos has many species, and this is the only 4th species I tried, so I can't tell if it is the meanest species. The other soft water species I kept were tame like goldfish, but they had poor health in my medium hard water. . Luckily he doesn't get big, presently only 4 inch, otherwise he will take over the tank. Here is another fighting scene of him.

very beautiful geo! from what i've read geo brasiliensis and close relatives are more aggressive than the rest of the geo's. It is hit or miss though as some have some that are very peaceful. I got 2 juvie brasiliensis with the rest of my geo's and am keeping a close eye on them

I have a mean red hump. He tries to fight with everyone.

Unfortunately in my area it's easier to find a unicorn than a steindachneri, so i have never kept one, but i have heard they can get pretty territorial.

And you are right. G. iporangensis Is probably the most feisty Geo. But I bet the days they stay in the genus are numbered.

Agreed, ditto to the various other fish currently found within the brasiliensis complex. Not true geos, hence why they are generally more aggro by nature.
