How common are albino shovelnoses? I am not sure the type of shovel but it is a shovelnose catfish.

TSN I'd guesstimate one in a million.

LSN is even rarer by orders of magnitude.

$500 bahahaha... thats an albino channel catfish, u.s. native.... $2.99 at most lfs. $8.99 if there bigger/over priced. Dont waste ur time o.p. u could buy enough to stock a small lake for $500. that price is absurd... should be $5.00. or free at that size as "rescue". sad its spent 5 yrs in that tank.

Good thing you checked here first before getting fleeced. If you like that fish you should be able to find plenty of young albino channel cats around. You might have better luck checking out the pond fish sections in the shops. That is where they are usually kept in the stores around here.

Agreed.

Shovelnose catfish is a generic common name used for several genera in the family of Pimelodidae or Long-antennae catfish, such as Pseudoplatystoma - tiger shovelnose, Sorubim - lima shovelnose, Sorubimichthys, Hemisorubim, and less frequently for Brachyplatystoma genus, such as tigrinus and juruense catfish.

The pictured catfish is not a shovelnose by any means, it is from a different family - Ictaluridae or North American catfish. Channel catfish are the most farmed fish in the US, including the albinism trait. If you order fish at any given restaurant, chances are high (IDK 75%?) you will be served this guy.

Whoever wants $500 for it is either clueless or is fishing in muddy waters / looking for clueless buyers with money to burn.
