They are very cool interesting fish , I had a pair years ago, the male used to sit there all day with his head poking out of his cave and come flying out to chase away any other fish that came too close. Very comical and grumpy looking thing.
If they are in a pond I doubt you will ever see them but they would probably love it there and have a great life too. I don't think you will,ever be able to catch them again once you put them in there unless you drain the whole thing.
If you are in Florida can't you go out to the swaps and just catch a lot of invasive fish, I'd do that, you might get something rare or interesting.
