Hi I'm planning on getting a gold diamond rhom from aquascape online.com and I'm wondering on what size aquarium I should place him in? I have a 55g but in also found a 100g on Craigslist in great condition for only $100. But would the 100g be too big for a 4.5 inch rhom or not?

Always better to start with 100G so you don't have to do extra work few months later for the setup/upgrade/moving :)

Without having experience with Rhoms, I do find it's better keeping small growouts in smaller quarters for starts, easier for them to find food, and often less stress in my opinion.
Don't know if that applies to Rhoms as they are very active, but a 55g would be enough to begin with, that's for sure.

I would grow the rhom out in the 55, and save my money for a aquarium atleast 180 gallons.:) Rhoms are very slow growing piranhas but are awesome once they become fully grown. Some Black Rhom in the wild get 2 ft, possibly larger in some parts of the Amazon.

Actually it's a 40g breeder, not a 55 my mistake. Would that still be fine to grow out a 4.5 inch rhom?

Once the rhom gets to about 5in they slow down to 1/2in growth a year, but some folks claim faster growth than that. Your rhom will be fine in a 40B for awhile, it will come down to what you like. I personally like to always keep my rhom in a 75g and recently upgraded. A 100g will be fine for life.

the 40 breeder will be fine for many years, you probably don't need to up grade until it gets bigger than 9"....maybe even bigger.
like others have said that rhom will grow very slowly..especially in captivity and you'll be lucky if you can get it grow pass 12"
