I want to do a diy filter for my AST, he's going into my 120 soon and I want to make the best filter I can, option one is a diy canister filter using a 50 gallon bucket, maybe ceramic rings as main bio media and some sponges for pre filter. Option two is using my 50 gallon and using either sponge or filter socks a pre filter and either ceramic rings again but a lot more then in the canister or using some kind of fluidized media. I kinda want to save money but I really want to make for the best filter I can any options is appreciated thanks

If you have the room for a 50 gallon bucket. It should be easy. I like sumps for ease of maintenance, and fluidized sand filters for general bio. Backed up with some lava rock in a media bag.

Just do a sump (not a canister) full of cheap biomedia. It will be more than you need regardless if you go 50 gallon.
