I went to the LFS today and he had beautiful F2 jags for 24$. I've always wanted one so I jumped on it. Well I really underestimated how small he is. I put him in a 75g that's running an emperor 400 and penguin 350B. The only tank mates right now is a jewel that I also bought there. At first it seemed like the current was too strong for the little guy. The jewel isn't much bigger than the jag maybe a half inch. I have backup tanks all the way down to 5g I can use, the question is should I set up a smaller tank until the jag gets bigger? I know they are really slow growers...

I grew my Honduran Jag out from 1" to his current 3 - 3 1/2" in a 35 gallon tank. His next tank is the 75g to himself till he goes to the 225g. Start him off in a 20-30g if you have one and once he is about 3" you should be fine in a larger tank. Sometimes to large of a tank can stress some fish out, the jag may hide for a bit in the 75 only coming out for food but he will grow pretty quickly so it wouldn't hurt.

I would remove the jewel cichlid and grow out the jag in the 75 g. The last thing that you would want to happen is find a dead $24 jag.

Yep, since my 75 was empty I'm using it as a quarantine rather than set one up. Jewel will be out in two weeks.

I would leave it and let him have the room. I once had a single Green spotted puffer in a 75 it was fun to see him with all that room.

I've never heard that jags are slow growers. I've only heard the opposite.

I looked into it a little more I guess the first 10 inches are fast and then it slows down. This is my first jag so idk

I say leave him in the 75. Feed him good food and provide clean water and he'll do fine.
