You could look into replacing the wave maker and surface skimmer with an HOB filter. It will give additional filtration, add a lot of surface agitation, but won't add too much flow to the tank to mess with the fish.

If you're worried about the look of additional tubes, you can add a Venturi tube to your return. Eheim makes a nice one off the shelf. If your return is PVC, it's pretty easy to create a Venturi tube with some plastic hose. There are plenty of examples on the web.
