Every once in a while, my bichirs (6 dels and 1 teugelsi) will have weird looking root like gills.
What is the cause? Harmful?

That is normal. As it grows and matures it will go away. It's used to get the oxygen from the water.
When all polypterus hatch from eggs they will have external gills like newts, and as was stated will go away with the growth of the poly.
Completely normal. This was my Delhezi when I first got it
This was my weesii with gills
The weeksii took forever to get rid of the gills. The pic above was when I got it at 7". Notice below she has little buds still showing at almost 13". They are gone now but weeksii are one of the slowest to get rid of them.
