ill also agree that jack dempseys can be kind of shy.

i agree with pops that a smaller cichlid is more suitable.

I would not put anything that grows more than six inch in a 55;
1 fish that can hardly move is not just wrong but also very boring.
A pair of smaller cichlids with some suitable dithers would be much more interesting long term.

I think firemouth is a great choice for the tank size. Get a bigger tank if you want any of the really awesome wet pets. I love Oscars and parachromis (jag, rtm, dovii) but my favorite is amphilophus, red devil, midas etc...

You can't go wrong with thorichthys. They still have lots of character and a fully grown male is beautiful. Plus your tank is big enough for them.

I also really recommend a firemouth, if you have the patience to grow one out; you'll be rewarded with a cichlid that shows plenty of personality, outrageous colours, and isn't likely to bother your other fish.

I used to have a firemouth years ago. He was pretty peaceful. Didn't grow much at all though. Still a nice fish. It's a good option. Im thinking of maybe a severum as a good choice too

Severums can grow quite large, too big for a 55 imo. However they won't overwhelm the bioload on the tank as they aren't huge waste producers.
