Shims it is!
My rough cut fir splinters like crazy, even with brand new blades in my saws.
I have some scrap oak hardwood that I am going to use instead. Easier to work with, hard wood and a little more pleasing to the eye (although who will notice with 180 gallons of water and Tropheus on top).
Thanks to everybody who contributed to this thread. MFK'ers are some of the most helpful hobbyists around.
