as for feeding, Start him out on Live Black Worms. Use a turkey baster to put some right in front of him. After a few weeks of eating that , try him on night crawlers or earth worms. Get him fat and healthy b4 you try chopped fish. From what I read they LOVE love love worms!

Run the substrate on sensitive skin ( I use my four arm ) if it goes red it will irritate a Ray

It does look like ammonia burn from shipping tho and not irritation from substrate

Health of the Ray before posting is debatable unfortunatly a lot of flaps get these on there lists order them in but ain't got a clue regarding there care there a specialist fish unlike any other

I feel that u do have a chance of success with this Ray and he's not a lost cause ,

Keep offering feeds often 4-5 times a day if u can remove after 1 hour if uneaten ur only savour maybe to get him onto earth worms normally a food they carnt resist

Thanks for the info Ashley106 Ashley106 I am still going to play it safe and move him to his own tank for now. I picked up a stock tank that is perfectly flat on the bottom instead of rigid like the Rubbermaid one. Its 53x36x20, am getting it put together now to move him this evening.

I am going to run to the store and grab some small earthworms. I have called every pet and bait store around me and nobody carries blackworms, so I am hoping some small earthworms will gauge his interest.

The Prazi comes in tomorrow, should I immediately start treating or wait until he is eating before I attempt to treat? Any tips on the ammo burn? I saw earlier that salt added to the water would be a good thing, any ideas on how much I should add and specifically what type?

Thanks again to everyone helping, this guy has a much better chance of survival with you guys assisting!

I use pool filter salt. You can use cichlid salt, or even marine salt. I think I heard people using a cup per 50 Gallons. Not sure on dosage, some say a tablespoon for every 5 gallons, Get another recommendation on dosage. I use about 3/4 of a cup per 50 gallons in every tank all the time. Just in case ya know. But that's me and my fish???

Looks like ammonia burn from shipping. What size tank do you have him in now? I would leave him in the current tank if you can- less stress than moving into a new one. Definitely try earthworms. Start with small, cut pieces.

He was in a 220, but I did go ahead and move him to the stock tank. The Geos were eating everything I tossed in, so he wasn't moving fast enough to get any of it. I made sure temps were exact, etc. I think it was as stressless as moving could be. I had a very large net, let him swim into it and then already had a rubbermaid tub with tank water in it, moved him immediately into it while still in the net, then dumped the water into the stock tank and let him swim out of the net on his own.

I do think he ate half of an earthworm so far, but now that he is alone I am going to cut them into much smaller pieces, as the half of an earthworm he ate took him a while and he was clearly struggling with it. Going to keep trying to feed him, this will make it easier during the process of getting him healed back up, parasite free and aggressively eating I think. Once he is healed up, fat and can get his own food I will move him back. Also, I can do more frequent water changes with the stock tank as it has a drain on the bottom and will be much easier.

As for dosing, thanks for the recommendations, I will see what others think as well. Also, do you guys still think I should start treating with Prazi or get him eating good first? I am not sure how much stress the Prazi treatments will put on him.

Thanks again

So a bit of a progress update. Seems to be doing ok, has been eating small junks of earthworm ok, but not much still. He is eating once sometimes twice a day, a 2-3 small pieces. Equals to about 1 and a half earthworms. I have been offering pieces a few times a day, leave it in there for an hour or so. Have offered fresh tilapia in very small pieces, he hasn't touched those again.

He is not eating with any urgency. But at this point we are 4 days in, so I am hoping he will perk up as he gets to eating regularly. I am planning a good water change for Wednesday or Thursday of next week and will start treating the tank with Prazi. Haven't gotten a look at his underside, he isn't climbing the walls in the stock tank like he was in the aquarium.

We'll see how the next couple of days play out.

So, another update. He has been eating earthworms slowly still. He has gotten up to a few smaller worms per day in total. I end up leaving them in there for a few hours before he will eat all of it. He is still pretty lethargic and inactive for the most part.

However, tonight I put some 10 or 15 Ghost Shrimp in the tank and he has been slowly chasing and stalking them around. He has gotten a few, so it has been nice to see him moving around. He isn't flying around the tank or anything, but he has had constant movement for the last couple of hours or so, he hasn't had that really up until now.

Tomorrow I am going to do a pretty large water change and start dosing Prazi tomorrow night. I am happy with the amount he has been eating, especially with the Ghost Shrimp. I am hoping he will keep eating through the treatment.
