Just kidding about that 150 number I got 217 too... 28/4=7. Out of the 28 they tagged they recaught 4 of them or 1/7th of them. So take that scale factor to 31 and you get 217.

216 comet goldfish by Lincoln-Peterson method [(28*31)/4=216], assuming the effort/techniques/conditions were equivalent across the two days and no immigration/emigration had occurred overnight.

I love stickers.
I got the same as brookkeeper. View attachment 1131906
Ehh you did not get the same as brook keeper. Brook keeper got 216 and Ehh got 217. Ehh wins, Brookkeeper you did your division wrong. Since Ehh wins he can have the choice of the decal or a MFK post card. Brookkeeper you can have a consolidation prize of what ehh didn't choose. PM me your addresses.

I solved it with an extra step and did the ratio.

X/31=4/18. Then I crossed multipled, which is a term math teachers hate for some reason, and solved.

I didn't actually do my division wrong, I just closed my calculator app and apparently forgot the final number between here and there... Figured that out as soon as Ehh posted. Not that it matters. Either way, it was fun! I am enjoying this new community I found, thank you all!

Yay. My gf is a math major and I was telling her about this problem. We were wondering where the 216 came from. I figured it was a typo.

Also, what made you decide to post a math question? In a stat class I took a year ago we talked a little about animal populations. In a math class too.

I teach this method, as well as "sample without replacement" (which requires linear regression) in a college level ecology lab. We use "populations" of supper worms in oat bran that the students use cups to scoop for equal effort sampling. Each pair of students get a known (to the instructor) number of worms in their population ranging from 25-250 worms. The best part of this story is the thousands of super worms, which we need for one week, that I then get to use to feed my trout for the rest of the semester! Only I don't give a prize for the right answer, I just make fun of the students who are waaaay off...

Next time, you should require linear regression... I will win that one.
