so I have been looking around and have seen alot of people with sand instead

of gravel so i pose the question to all: witch is better and why?

and if you do have sand is it possible to use a under the gravel filter with it ?

I voted sand. why? looks cosmetically better and easier to clean up since all junk stays on the top. And i do not know about the gravel filter.

I have gravel but I think sand is better with the right set up. I think for tanks with alot of water movement gravel would probably be better.

I have sand and would never go back to gravel. sand is so easy to clean and just looks more natural. I guess a ugf will work, but why? sumps, cannisters, and hang ons are more effective and far easier to maintain.

fine gravel.. coarser grade then sand so it won't ruin filters and get "fluffed up" by boisterous fish. easy to plant in.. all around looks nice.

i keep geo's so its got to be sand for me, stays cleaner and more natural looking. i use kiddies play pit sand which is about £2.99 for 25kg compared to lfs gravel at £20 for the same weight.

I switched from gravel 6 months ago.....love it. Never again will I do gravel. No more black gunk....I have strong current and some diggers and they have not hurt a filter yet!

i think that very fine gravel is best its probaly 3 time the size of sand grians.it dosnt get into your filers,so can vacum it it dosnt compact and certain fish still borrow

My votes for sand, looks better and if my turtles eat the gravel it can cause some major problems sand however they'll just pass it.
