in my 55 i have two pieces of mopany driftwood and even after letting the tannins out and changing water daily before putting them in the tank my tank is still tea colored. the water is perfectly clear but i would like for the water to not be all brownish. theres no algae and its not dirty in the least the tannin color just stained. is there anything to do for me to help speed the clarity process up? or a water clarifier or somthing? :screwy:

that brown thing in the water may not be pleasant to the eye but it makes most of your fish, especially soft water species happier than u might think.

yeah i know the fish love it but i just wish it would be clear. all my tanks have always been crystal clear but like jack said i will just have to have patience :nilly:

i have a driftwood in my tank for 2 years and still releases tanins. your best bet is to boil it.

Agreed. I have mopani wood that I am leeching of tannins at this moment.. I put it in a small tank first for initial soaking. turned the water completely brown. then I boiled it twice for at least an hour each time. it was a pain to get the large pan to boil. lol the "boil" i had going could best be described as a foaming. anyway. i then put the piece in my empty 110 to see if it could still leech enough to stain the water. it didnt color it at all. boiling is your best bet. ps. this was my first time with bogwoods/heavy woods.

add carbon or purigen, it will remove tannins, but the water won't be totally clear again until the wood is finished leeching

Purigen even removes tannins??? WHAT DOESN'T THIS STUFF DO??? You wouldn't happen to know what chemical(s) are in purigen that nullify tannins do you? that stuff is like the aquarist's crack, so long as you don't mini-cycle your tank :D
