I know this may sound stupid, but I've heard that a lot of people will put a ping pong ball or something in the tank to keep large cichlids interested and entertained. Does anyone here actually do this?

ive heard something about people doing it with arowanas so that they dont get ad drop eye. never heard about it with large cichlids though

I've heard about it being used with arowanas, too. What I think would work better, though, is to place some branches and stuff several inches, or even a few feet, above the water's surface. That way, the fish's eyes would always be trained upwards , since it would be looking up at the branches and expecting a tasty animal to perch there. After all, that's what they do in the wild.

I actually saw a fish "toy" the other day, basically a plastic multi-colored floating ball-like thing. It was marketed towards oscars (at least, there was a picture of an Oscar on it :)).

I chucked a ping pong ball in with my CA\SA cichlids...nothing really happened beside my largest Oscar trying to eat it.

my breeding pair of osacars used to play with a ping pong ball all the time(used to push it around all day long),but none of my other large cichlids ever paid it any mind.

years ago my large pacu, and jag would push it around a little. My pacu would crush the balls with his teeth and the jag would attack them when they went to his side of the tank. Never got any of my other fish to to this. So they will play with them but its rare.

If you are looking for ways to entertain your fish, get a bubble wand.
