What to put with a male green terror?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My female GT was in a 90 with a few other cichlids and it's nothing short of amazing how big a change in temperament and behavior once they moved into the 300. If it were me, I'd pick a cichlid that's gets 6-8". You can keep a male in a 55, but I really don't think you'll see the fishes true beauty in such a small environment.

There are alot of other cool mid sized cichlids that would work in a 55. Good luck!

It sucks being a kid and not being able to get those massive tanks :irked:

He owns one so i think personal xp is about as much research as you could get
I currently own 1 breeding pair male is getting vloser to 9" female is 7" i could not imagine my pair cramped in a small 55... I also have 2 small grow outs and have owned many in the past

yea........and it took me 40 years to be able to get my dream tank, which around here is actually pretty small lol. Especially if your trying to keep big cichlids in a communty. I think I'll be able to house 3-4 for sure. 5 and 6 are in there now and are working well, but im ready to move the three smallest out at the first sign of trouble. Time and Size will tell.

The change in my female Green terror from the 90 to the 300 is pretty remarkable though. She was one of the most shy and nervous fish I had. Now with all the added space shes front and center, colored up and putting on size and runs the entire center of the tank. Total change in demeanor for the better and thats good because she'll probably always be one of the smaller fish anyways due to slow grow rate. She needs all the help she can get and the added space has shown a pretty marked improvement in her health and overall personality. Shes quickly becoming one of our favorites.

i guess i'll end the topic of a green terror in a 55 by saying that I am not going that route lol. i'm going to do geophagus orange heads and angels with some tetras instead. if i did a GT it would only be that one male GT and since they get 8-10" it would have to be by itself and would be begging for a tank upgrade in time. the only GTs I've heard of getting 12" inches were ones that started off in a massive tank. my dad has 5 jack dempseys in his 250, they all started off in that tank as juvies and now the two bigger males are 12" and the three females are 9" inches. they co-exist well with the 3 sunfish and 1 bluegill we caught. :)

Sounds like a cool tank. Have any pics?
