PLECO HUNT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
they are just fish i am not sure why so many people are bothered by this. invasive species need to go. i mean if every one was expected to try and find a home for every invasive fish they came upon then we would be in the realm of insanity. i just really think if u are one of the people that are so concerned with what happened to these fish then u should go out of your way and try to do something about it, anything u can as opposed to telling the op what she should have done. i mean u obviously have the internet and so u should take some action if u feel that this was such an unnecessary massacre.

And then decide if you want to revise that statement. RESEARCH before you post, I know you're a nice girl but you make yourself look really ignorant.

You don't get my point.. We are talking about people comparing a pleco and asian carp, when it's clear that asian carp are currently doing more harm. To say that they are just alike, you can't. Any fish, whether native or not can eradicate other species.

Humans eradicate species of animals all the time.. let's just start killing them.

The faults in logic here are mind boggling. Plecos in at least one instance have been shown to destroy an ecosystem and affect native species. Just because plecos haven't become as large of a problem as carp does not mean they don't have the potential to do serious damage. It could be a matter of they just simply haven't been introduced in certain areas or they can't survive colder temperatures like carp--that doesn't mean they don't have potential to cause serious harm to the environment (read the article, it's happened before and has been documented with PLECOS).

do people not realize that floods do happen and just because it is a land lock pond the plecos could still make it out into the water ways

Let's all take a deep breath:

In florida, the law is that if you catch a Non-native, you are not allowed to put it back into any body of water. With restricted fish, like Claria and SH, you HAVE to kill them. There are severe penalties for possessing live ones.
So the only options are adoption, or death. If you catch a Pleco, you cannot put it back. It is illegal.

As far as harming the ecosystem.... I don't know.
Since we are talking about man-made lakes and canals here, what is so natural anyway? Most of these lakes in communities are man made, and were stocked arbitrarily anyway.
Pbass were introduced in the 80's, and so they are considered "gamefish". But Oscars have been around a lot longer, and are considered "Invasive".
I don't think there is a clear line here. The best bet is to stick to what the law says, and not get into trouble.

thankyou for your input :) invasive species in these waterways NEED TO GO. Also people keep on telling me what i should of done or what needs to be done, when if they care so much they could pitch in and help there waterways whereever they live

these guys are really hardy and can often be seen walking around during floods to different lakes

Really? Are we sure on this? walking around? I don't see how they could even move about for long, as they are not the proper shape- like eel, snakehead, bichir..
