I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between H. Carpintis Vontehillo and the H. Carpintis Escondido. Is it just the location from where they come from? Thanks for your input.

I was told the Vontehillo have squiggly lines on the face and the Escondido do not. But the ones pictured at Jeff Rapps website shows the Escondido have the squiggly lines on the face. So I'm confused what's what. Also, I saw one at a LFS with squiggly lines on one side of the face and dots on the other. I'm really confused on that one. Good Luck.

There was a lot of heated discussion over this topic a while back. Threads were closed and infractions were being given out like party favors........
The Escondido and Vontehillo populations are found in close proximity to one another and, as far as I can tell, there is little or no difference between the two. If there is, I can't tell based on the captive specimens that I've seen.
It was argued by some that the two ARE the same fish from the same watershed and that the fish being sold with the collection point 'vontehillo' were repackaged Escondidos. Nobody knew at the time what was what but that didn't stop speculation and curiosity..... and a lot of mud slinging.
In the end GPS coordinates were supposedly released which confirmed the collection location.
Differences noted by several hobbyists include deeper blue coloration and larger spots on the vonts and larger humps on the escons. As I said, I can't speak to any of this personally but I do own 5 vontehillos that I find very good looking.

I think Escondidos have a crisper, more defined edge around each spot. Vontehillos are a little faded aound the edges. Esscondidos seem to have more "worming" spots as well.

Thanx James,
Took the words outta my mouth, lol, Cavamart knows Carpintis. Yeah lets not make this into what happened before, "Thread Fight", If you want to look at a grown Escondido go look at AquaMojo's pics. Like said, Escondido has more defined pearls and Vontehillo has "blurred" pearls which in my opinion makes the overall fish look very shiny. Still all variants have their own beauty including Chairel and the other one...Latille something (help me here guys)

I cringed when I saw the thread title. I'm glad everyone is playing nice. Plus it is displaying some amazing pics. And the phrase "Texas cichlid" hasn't even been used at all!:banhim:

Thanks all. This really helps out a lot. Sounds like there was some heated discusion about this a while ago. Does anyone have any 4-5 in. escondido FS or does anyone know a reliable source for them?

They are the same fish. They come from the same watershed and look almost identical. What are being sold as Vontehillo show some very slight differences but that is common with fish populations.

I really did not think there was much difference. What ever it is probably is not noticed by many. Again, I think it is people creating nothing and others following.
