Delhezi fry

aweseome! thanks for sharing your info!

Breeding bichirs has always been a goal of mine but I always got distracted and added more fish making the whole process very difficult. What is the substrate in the breeders tank? And what PH are your tanks at? How many hours a day of lighting, and what intensity?

Aging the water is going to be difficult for me, perhaps if I store water in a couple of large trash bins with water hyacinths and floating plants, I could achieve the same affect.

Do you have any fish in the filtered ponds where the water is aged?

Do the bichirs spawn all year or only at certain times of the year?

Thanks again Terry.

Nice! So they already bred twice for you or is the other batch from a different pair?

They have spawned dozens of times over the last 2 years with only 2 lots of fry produced, both pairs are spawning and I think the fry are from the same pair. I keep them in a 600ltr tank lighting is from skylights in the roof of the fish shed, there is a light on the tank but it is only used for when I'm cleaning the tank. The fish wake up to natural daylight, a timer switches overhead lights on before nightfall so I can feed in the evenings. The ph is about 7.5
Ageing water in a bin with water hyacinth should give the same results as my 20000ltr pond. There are 10 x 6" Red line torpedo barbs ( P. denisonii) and a couple of pairs of bristlenose in the pond. The stock level is kept low because the main purpose of the pond is to supply water to the fish shed.

The early hatchlings look like early or toad tadpoles, the later look like salamander juveniles. These are an illustration of evolution if I ever saw one- brilliant. The external gills are really something- you can see the linkage from lobe-fin fish to early amphibious animals. Any science educators out there should be saving these time-lapse shots.
Brilliant.

The original 4 are doing well these pics show one of them at 11 weeks old, only one survived from the 2nd batch he is about 2.5cm so is past the critical stage. I had a power failure for 13 hours this caused lots of problems in the fish shed resulting in lots of fry losses but I didn't lose any adult fish. My 7.5kw generator was wired in today so no more power problems.
I collected several hundred eggs today, they look good and hopefully will hatch on wednesday
