The bowfin is really holding it's own for it not to be a gar.

I know there a lot of bowfin fans on the site, so I figured having at least one thread outside coldwater/natives to show their support couldn't hurt. I've noticed a lot of the people picking bowfins don't post at all in the gar section and probably wouldn't have noticed the poll otherwise, so I don't think the gar numbers are really taking a hit here.

Thanks again Madding! I voted for the LNG also, but it WAS my main goal to give this creature it's forum!

I am no longer "allowed" to mention the ancient menace on this site by more than one Mod. I think that they are just jelous that they are not in Xanders league as Moderators. They can tell me until they are blue in the face that all forums on MFK are created equally. HAHA! I could care less how they created it. What makes the "ANCIENT FISH forum" and the "GAR sub forum" hands down best on the site is NOT the tecnical design of the site. Xander needs to explain to these less knowlegable moderators that it is the quality level of the members that frequent THIS forum. They have less than no concept of just how "lucky" that they are to have members like Richard and David to set this forum apart.

I rarely EVER see the "trolling" and "antagonistic" types of posts in the Gar forum that plagues the Lounge, Fishing, Cold Water & even General Aquaria forum to a lesser extent.

I will most likely be banned from the site for suggesting the creature get recognition after your poll reveals that this ANCIENT menace tops the list of "FAVORITE GAR" on the ancient site.

One particular Moderator went as far as to say that the "SIMILAR APPEARING SNAKEHEAD" belongs in the "Ancient fish section" before the "unspeakable" would.

Hmmmm I guess I misunderstood the term "ancient". Distant ancestor of the Snakehead "NOT modern species" fossil records date them back to possibly 50 million years. The EXACT species in your pole (NOT it Ancestors) date back 150 million years.

I am also misunderstanding (COLD WATER & NATIVE NA). From my personal experience with the "unspeakable" I have found precious little difference in the progress of development anywhere between unheated outdoor pond to indoor heated aquarium.

IMO they are NOT coldwater fish. They THRIVE in Florida WARM waters! Well, they are STRICTLY North American, so I guess that is what best "lumps" them into that "category".

It has been my pleasure learning from you all, and would take this moment to "thank each of you". I will continue to "read" any new "Gar" data here, as a guest, and as always find your experience and willingness to help others second to none!

You really like bowfin, don't you? :D

Bowfin also fall under the "Temperate" category which is another reason why they got lumped into that forum; in reality, said forum is kind of a catch-all type forum for a bunch of different fishes that fall under one of the three categories in the sub-forum title.

In an ideal world, bowfin would be added in with the "Gar Sub-forum" to form the "Gars & Bowfin Sub-forum" a.k.a "Holostei Sub-forum" since they are closely related after all. There are other changes that could be made such as move both the "Arowana Sub-forum" and the "Knifefish Sub-forum" from the "Ancient Fish Forum" because both of these groups of fishes fall under Teleostei which is sometimes referred to as the "modern fishes." Freshwater Stingrays and Sturgeon & Paddlefish could actually get added to the "Ancient Fish Forum" because of their ancient nature (from an evolutionary standpoint). I would suggest adding lampreys to the "Ancient Fish Forum", too, but literally next to no one on here has ever kept them for long.

But, hey, let's get the bowfin added to this sub-forum before we start going crazy with changes.

Only the most brazen trolls venture here, but they get eaten for breakfast. :grinno:

Leeman, I like your passion! But surely fighting a futile battle against the powers-that-be and predicting your own ban is not a good way to tackle this situation. I agree that the comment about Snakeheads being in ancient fish doesn't make much sense. But otherwise the mod in the bowfin thread has raised some good points and was being pretty open to ideas.

Above all, there needs to be suitable traffic for some of these proposed sub-forums, such as bowfin. The poll will help, but not much. You need to find out how many people on the site actually keep bowfin, want to keep bowfin, have kept bowfin, etc. Polls in the freshwater general section, the ancient fish section, and the natives section (even the same poll in all three places) would help to get an idea of the numbers. If you can prove that there are a greater number of active members that would participate in bowfin discussion than say, the stagnant lungfish forum, then I think we could make a case.

I am always willing to help, but I don't have a ton of time lately and most of my time here is used to make me a better gar keeper. But I can definitely pitch in, you just need to calm down about the moderation staff. All too many of us would agree with your opinions, but mod-bashing isn't going to get the bowfin anything.

i picked longnose, its what got me started on this site after i caught a baby LNG out of the Ohio River when it was less then 4". I had to get rid of him when he hit about 12" but he started my love for gar and monster fish all together
