PETA sue Seaworld for enslave the whales...

Whales and dolphins should not be kept by anyone including zoos and aquariums. There are many documented cases of them committing suicide while in captivity which is a definite indicator that they're not receiving the mental, physical, and social stimulation that they need in order to live well. Remember the dolphin from Flipper? She killed herself after living a miserable life at the Miami Seaquarium.

this is a bunch of crap this is one thing i dont agree with peta on, Whats the difference between seaworld and these aquariums who have all these fish etc, nothing. These fish and whales at sea world are treated with royalty, I love seaworld and peta you need to stop being stupid with this and let it go..

There have few documented cases of fish commit sucide by jump out of the tank, does that means we cannot keep the fish?

No offence to my buddy but yeah.... So my gar commited suicide cause he was sad?

Conservation through commercilization

speaking of the constitution, it allows us to "armchair quarterback". So what's your take on Seaworld's captive care then from the inside?

I do not work at Sea World. I will say the places I have delt with marine animals are TIGHTLY watched by the USDA and many other regulatory agencies in the US. If they didn't follow the preset rules of keeping those types of animals in the absolute best care, they would be shut down.

Well now that's stupid. Like if you need to have first-hand experience to have an opinion. And of course you say that because you're on the inside, since you sort of do these things for a living. And to be clear, this isn't about mistreatment or neglect. I have no doubt that the people working with these animals love and care for them to the fullest of their abilities, so again, stop making my arguments into something their not.

I never said you can't have an opinion. Just don't create an opinion based on lies and twisted facts that aren't real. You have made seveal posts getting at the fact that they aren't being cared for - which is wrong.

That article is pure crap. There are not MANY DOCUMENTED CASSES. The media takes ONE case and spreads it all over. It's written about a total whack job that tweaked one night. That was an OLD dolphin at the end of her life. HE WAS THE GUY WHO CAUGHT HER AND CARED FOR HER! (Talk about calling the kettle black). Later that week, that 'expert' ended up in PRISON for breaking the law and mistreating dolphins. So, let's recap: Guy catches dolphins and makes money, guy claims dolphins living a terrible life (but it's the life HE is providing), guy goes to jail for law breaking in regard to how we are to treat dolphins in human care. Yeah, I'm not going to buy into anything that article has to say. Also, he is not a biologist, nor trained in science at all. He was a guy who caught and trained them to do shows for kids. He has no background or training to determine anything about that dolphin. There was(and still is) a vet staff that handled ALL of those aspects. It was also over THREE DECADES ago when that happend. A LOT has changed in that time. Remember fish care back then? A good filter was a carbon box, cotton and an air bubbler in the middle. Glass fishtanks had metal frames and you were lucky to see your fish, let along keep them alive for years.

For the record, Miami Seaquarium has one of the top dophin breeding programs in the US right now. So great that places like Shedd Aquarium actually send there dolphins to MSQ so they can get pregnant. When Georgia Aquarium opened a dolphin area, where you do think they got the staff? Miami Seaquarium. MSQ is also the top manatee rescue facility in the US.

So many people in this thread are using the animal's inteligence as an argument....keeping to the original topic, which was PETA, they do not care how inteligent the animal is. EVERY animal, in their opinion, should never be kept in captivity or captured at all. So this thread, in it's purest form, is truly a debate as to whether ANY animal should be kept in captivity. I LOVE having fish tanks, i LOVE going to sea world, the zoo and other aquarium facilities. At these places, I learn more about the animals than I could ever hope to by reading books or articles or anything. I also LOVE learning. So for me, animals in captivity is okay, as long as man does its part to make their habitat as close to natural as possible. Obviously never hoping to creat an entirely natural habitat in a zoo or a living room, but the intent is good. And if you want to make an argument of intelligence, consider OUR intelligence, the intelligence of people. Who's to say that if an Orca were as smart as a human, that it wouldn't cage us up and make us do tricks?

I guess what I am trying to say, in a round about way, is that this is borderline ridiculous. Those animals that are bred in captivity don't know any different than the cage, pool, enclosure that they are in. Put them in the wild and they die...as we saw with Keiko (free willey).

How about this. People have always kept fish. people will likely always keep fish and will do whats best for them if thats what they can. Get over it. And a pissed off angry, melancholy Orca wouldn't openly invite gentle belly rubs. So I'm guessing " which is what 99% of us are doing" that the Orcas are fine.

Just for fun... I'll toss this out. Should we assume all (similar species) marine mammals are equally smart? Or would it be fair to go with the idea that some are Issac Newton while others are Forrest Gump?

if you keep an aquarium you are guilty. I am a slave owner. I bought my dog. he eats only what I give him and he is not free to go where ever he wants. I am starting a new organization to stand up against the idiots at P.I.T.A. it will be called P.U.T.A. People for the Unethical Treatment of A&%HOLES.

I am guilty of keeping animals in cages and aquariums also. Has Seaworld and any other company thought about how much people spend to go on animal safaris and whale watching? Why not build a huge enclosure for the whales, etc... and let them roam freely? Make the enclosures with 85-90 % of viewing space and an area where the animals can have privacy. So what if you can't see a whale flip over for a belly rub. Being able to see the whales, etc... do what they want is best.

As hobbyist we are not going to refuse to buy a fish because it doesn't jump through hoops literally. We allow our fish to do what they want in the aquariums. The fish and aquarium selling business are doing very well. PETA is extreme many times. Why do we get mad when someone keeps a tiger, lions, etc... in an apartment or in a enclosure in a backyard? You know the enclosures that only have room for a animal to jump on top of wood shelters and maybe a piece of wood suspended and pace back and forth.

aparpaima that is on here has the 50,000, 20,000 gallons and more in aquariums that most of us would love to have. The only issue for us would be the money or the space to do it. However, Seaworld and the rest have the money and the space to build the largest enclousures for their animals. Even a betta wants more room. As soon as the betta realizes it's in a decent size space, their behavior changes completely. Take the same betta and put it in a bowl or a cup it acts depressed after it's been in the larger space.
