Gymnogeophagus balzanii tank

My water is below pH6, which isn't actually ideal - Ed mentioned their native water should be a little over pH7. Sometimes I buffer it up a little bit after WC but most of the time I'd forget...I thought it was getting close to summer in Uruguay so I started heating the tank a week ago to about 80F. Also removed a distracting male and some other smaller fish.

PS. Eggs look good so far. 2-3 white ones but most are normal. The female is pretty big and knows what she is doing.
 
That pH sounds like my water for once! What's your hardness?

Maybe I need to get some fry from you, when you get that far. :) It'd be nice to keep a tank that doesn't have to be heated all the time. The males only get the big hump when spawning, right? I could learn to love an ugly male if only for a few weeks at a time. :p
