Monster 822 gallon (ext) aquarium build thread

Ok that clears up that idea. Since the Ultima is better for biological filtration, no I won't be getting one of them. I am not currently using socks on my two wet/dry, just the blue foam padding that catches some dirt here and there, but I am considering using them socks. I will post a thread to see if anyone ever used socks in a wet/dry application. I would probably need to lay them in the wet/dry tray to catch the water.

I just set up a filter sock for the first time on my new 120. I went with the largest sock at 8". It seems to work fine. Very simple and easy to set up. I have pic's on the whole set up in my 120 thread.

Yes, I need to find out more about these RTL-100 style filtration. I think they may be to tall to go under my stand which is only 32'', but I really need to get more inforamtion about these as far as housing, pumps etc..

Yeah me too. I like the extra capacity of the larger filter. I was looking into getting the Nu-Clear extention to double the filter capacity. Now this is a possible option.

In another thread you mention using poly fiber, are they micron rated. I am looking to enhance my sumps's mechnical filtration to help the nu clear canister out and where are you buying it in bulks from?

I got a huge roll of the pink stuff :) It works great, I love how easy it is to change/replace. I will shoot a couple pics later. Here's a link: Bulk Media Rolls

I don't believe your filtration will accommodate filter bags without making some modifications to your sumps. If you want to add some mechanical filtration, you can try some 100 micron filter pads. I know the blue "prefilter" stuff you are talking about and it's garbage. On my old wet/dry truvu truflo I used 100 micron filter pads (http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewi...campaign=mdcsegooglebase2&utm_content=UJ00126) and they worked well. You can also get finer pads, but they will clog pretty quickly. I'm not sure what would happen on your setup if the pad starts to clog (on my system, the water would just overflow into the other area of the sump with no problems), but you would obviously want to make sure that the water has somewhere to go other than over the top of your wet/dry filter and onto the floor.

To clean them I would just lay them on some cement in the yard and spray them down with the hose on "jet" mode...worked really well to get all the crud out. I could reuse the same filter pad for over 1 year.

I hope you find some way to incorporate filter socks in your sumps. They may provide you with the additional mechanical filtration you want without you having to buy another filter.

Yes, that's the plan for now. I will eventually upgrade the mechanical filtration, but for now finding better padding for the sump would be suffice to help he canister. The canister work really well at polishing the water currently, but I am sure at some point, knowing me, changing out all three cartridges will start to be a PITA and I am sure as the fish grow and start producing larger waste, the canister may not be able to handle the load.

That would be great, I am all for ease of maintenance, install, get dirty, discard and replace. I like you mind set. lol

Yes, I love the look of the large sumps you have where the water drains into the sock, but I have the standard wet/dry set up, becsue of space limitations and ease of removal in the event something goes wrong.
I thought maybe I could lay the sock in the tray, but now that I know there is differnt grades of padding, I will try some different padding. That should do the trick for now..
Thanks all, this is indeed a great website...

You can search ebay for 'micron material' and there is a seller who sells very large sheets for about $12. I can make about 36 filter pads out of one sheet which is very economical. They have sizes in 25 and 100 micron I believe.

The problem is if the pads get clogged up, where is your overflow going? Also, extremely high flow rates may not handle this unless the surface area of the pad is large enough.

I use 100 micron filter socks from mcmaster under the drain pipes, then at the bottom of my intake chamber use a 25 micron filter pad cut from this material for finer polishing. Still replacing the 25 micron every 4-5 days, but at that cost it is nothing. The 100 micron socks have been washed out and reused for over a month without replacing.

The 100 micron sock is basically a prefilter because without it the 25 micron pad would clog in 12 hours - impractical and unusable.

If it gets clog, it will flow over across the pad into the wet/dry the same and get suck back into the tank. I just won't get the trickle effect on the bio balls until I have changed the padding. no biggie. I am in the hunt for a huge roll of padding. I'd like to buy something with different grades so I can put the larger 100 micron pad on top and a 25 micron pad underneath for double mech filtration.
