Snails for Native Tank

Were the snails spiral shaped? If so these would be Malaysian trumpet snails. They burrow in the substrate and roam around at night. Also finding them in the filter is normal. I keep some sponges by my intakes and they gather up a bunch of nasty stuff and I always find tons of snails there eating that brown crap.

actually, i have a pleco in my native tank, but just do to allt he rocks and caves its very rare to see him, he is always hiding, so im fine with it, he does his job whent helights are off usually so its all good

+1 for nerites, if you can find the freshwater species. I got some from my LFS recently and they swarmed through my algae, no problem. the store recommended 1-2 snails per gallon, but it just depends on how bad the problem is. They wont infest your tank either, because they need salt/brackish water to breed. They haven't touched any of my plants... yet.

Good link for a listing of freshwater types.

Is anybody familiar with the Japanese Trapdoor snails? I have a few that are upside down with their trapdoor shut. Can they right themselves? Is it common for them to be in their shells for extended periods of time upside down with their trapdoors shut? I am pretty sure they are still alive.

sunfish are usually to curious and aggressive for snails or any little cleaner-upper invertabrates you might try to use.

Not familiar with trapdoors but sometimes snails behave that way. I have seen apples snails stay still with no activity for days. They may be stressed and just need time to recuperate. Keep an eye on them.

Ok, great!

Yeah they have still not been doing much. I do think that you guys are right about the sunfish being aggressive toward them. I saw my readbreast nip one of them to try and eat it and it went back in with the trapdoor shut. This is probably some of what keeps happening. Also, I am sure that my brown bullhead is harassing them all night long. Hmm. Hopefully things improve though!

Sounds like are getting harassed day and night! They may not ever wanna open up. They are gonna stay stressed and keep their doors shut, may eventually starve to death (if they don't get eaten before then).
