giant otter catches arapaima

I can see a River Otter catching a fish that size, I've seen Mink catching Koi proportionately similar from backyard ponds. Mustelids are infamous for capturing and killing prey much larger than they are... check out these pics of the River Otter's tiny relative the Stoat taking down rabbits way bigger than they are.

The stoat taking down the rabbit can be likened to a lion taking down a zebra.

After reading a bit this is an isolated incident of a tame otter and is indeed a remarkable feat. But it is a very rare occurrence and definitely not par for the course as with stoat and rabbits.

How can you say its a rare occurence, when those otters are still pretty unknown in their behavior? They kill big caimans and anacondas. Believe me, a fish is no big deal for them. Arapaimas are not known for their intelligence. Once pushed into more shallow water, he is doomed.

Darius learn to calm down a bit my man. This is a discussion not an argument.

I have said what I have said after reading up a bit.I am by no means an ichthyologist, zoologist or biologist. I merely enjoy reading about animals.

If it were not a rare occurrence would the arapaima not be recorded as one of the major prey items of the giant otter? Which I am yet to come across while reading online. The giant otters are being studied quite a bit more now by researchers and conservationists throughout their range. There is but one documented case of the otters catching and killing an arapaima. Sure caiman and anacondas do fall prey to the otters but once again that is a great feat but not as rare as this case.
