where are alligators legal as pets?

Did a little reading on this and it seems that the Pa.House of Representatives has passed bill H.B.1398 banning private possession of dangerous exotic animals....It is now up to the Pa.Senate to pass the bill.

That bill only specifically refers to a few species of mammals (mainly big cats, bears, primates, and wolves) and makes zero mention of reptiles; their terminology is pretty terrible because apparently birds are not animals according to them. It also appears to accidentally legalize sugar gliders, hedgehogs, and a few other species; for example, it looks like no permits are needed now for full-blooded servals. In my opinion, now's a good time to start preparing for and pricing out some of these newly legalized animals in order to get them before the politicians realize that they passed a bill that legalized many previously controlled/illegal species and try to amend it to include said species.

Here's the text to the full bill.

Ryan, shhhhhhhh. I dont want them to realise it legalizes servals. Still hope it doesnt pass.

My dodge dart might actually be sold if it passes. Would make me sad but....

Ryan I took a look at that link and although the language is vague two things jumped out at me; The phrase includes[,but is not limited to,and....all nonindigenous animals....Though not specifically mentioned,it seems to have servals covered.

The permit requirement was already in place before this bill and this bill makes no mention of it so I'd guess that a permit still would be required to purchase and possess any exotic that is not on the proposed ban list.

Look again at the bill. It says starting january 1 2013 no more permits will be issued. It also lists what animals will be banned. Servals arnt on the list. But you did point out a spot that it might fall into. its a piss poor written law.

I'll have to go over it again.I totally missed where it said no more permits will be issued next year, and who knows what thehell that could mean....If no more will be issued then no new purchaeses can be made?.That's what that sounds like as I don't see them doing away with the permit process to make it any easier to purchase certain animals....I agree with you though.

The listed animals are going to be illegal to possess if not obtained prior to the deadline e.g. you're not getting any of those if you don't already have a permit now since they hardly ever issue the permits.

As L.P. said, it's a terribly written law, and a two year-old with a grasp on big fancy words could write something better. For example, if all non-indigenous animals are covered by this law, then domestic dogs and cats are illegal because they failed to list an exemption for them; of course then, that means that any other non-indigenous animal such as a ball python or leopard gecko would become illegal as well. In the end, we just need to get these buffoons out of office before they screw something else up on account of their severe lack of knowledge on anything other than the art of slinging bull to the public.

If you go by that, it outlaws all cats and dogs as well as a few other commonly kept animals. Wtf
