Aqua Clear 110 Vs Emperor 400

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Actualy I can vouch for that. I accidently broke an impeller during maintenance once (wasnt an issue as I run double the filtration I need to) called the manufacturer and they sent all new internal parts no questions asked. And there was both a visual and slight physical difference from the old impeller to the new one I recieved. I have had good results with their products and they have very good customer service.

^ Been there and done that, I'm sitting next to noisy filters again, and really considering the AC 110. I love the old Emperor 400 with the flow control, but these new ones have been nothing but noise and trouble for me. I have 7 filters sent out by Marineland as replacements, and have even worked with them on the issues, and only after I took my Dremel to the thing has it been decent - though still louder than the older 400's I own. Even a replacement they sent me had a broken impeller blade right out of the box, the fin snapped off. Cheaper products now I guess.

I knowi f you contact marineland and tell them your emperor is noisy due to what sounds like the impellar catching on the housing they will send free of charge a new impellar and housing. The new impellar has a softer plastic on the fins so even if it hits the housing it wont sound half as bad. Also the housing they send has been updated so again it shouldnt make any noise. I only know this because 6 months ago i bought a emp 400 and couldnt stand the noise so i contacted them and thats when i was told about the new parts. I know a few people that have done this even though they have had there emp for 2 years ........might be time to replace the impellars for free ;-)

I def will try this, because i have four 400s running and the noise is just too loud sometimes.

Have Emperors gone downhill recently (I haven't owned one in years)? This argument isn't usually this one sided.

I've been sold on ACs for decades (to be fair I left the hobby for 12+ years in there), they are too good and too hassle-free to bother trying other HOBs anymore for me.

I use 3 Emperor 400s on my 500 and I'm not sure what everyone is talking about when it comes to noise. I also had an AC only because it was given to me and I didnt like it at all mainly because when a fish would hit the inlet, it would not pump any water. It was just as quiet thu as my Emperor 400. The AC may flow more when empty than the 400 but once you start adding media, that all changes. I use 4 filter pads per filter and my tanks are clear as ever. I buy my filter used or cheap as possible by hitting up the local fish stores (not the big chains, just mom and pop stores), ebay, amazon or anywhere they are on sale. Both filters cost too much at the local stores. I do the same thing with the filter pads.

The pads on ebay cost $32.99 which equals out to $2.74 each vs the same 12 pads at Jacks Aquarium which is my lfs costs $68 that comes out to $5.66 each and to boot, they sell them as a 3 pack?? The filters I usually pay around $30 for a used one, sometimes cheaper.

When Marineland revamped their line a few years back - I noticed the change in quality of the filters produced. Since I had older ones at the time (about 2006) I didn't think anything of it, mine were quiet and working fine. I sold my tanks and 'quit' the hobby for awhile due to family issues. I sold my last tank to a friend actually, and she still has it running without any issues with the two old Emperor 400 filters. I was first sold on the Emperor 400 filters by a LFS (now closed) back in early 1999.

When I got back into fish again, I bought Emperor 400 filters again, this was early 2010. I couldn't get them quiet like the old filters had been. The adjustment pull for the flow in the middle back was no longer there, it was solid plastic now at full flow. In the past if there was ever a noise I would just give the lever a little tug and it would straighten out, so I thought maybe I had some bad filters by accident. I found that bumping them did quiet them for a minute, and if I put a brick on the top they ran fine again - but having a brick up there was scary too. I complained to Marineland, they sent replacements, but I still had the noise. This continued for awhile actually, customer service was at least nice, but the quality started showing itself. In total, I had received and tested 4 Emperor 400, 1 Magnum 350 Pro (couldn't even set it up, the impeller was broken inside it when it arrived), and finally I settled on 2 Penguin 350 filters. All the HOB made more noise then any of their older designs. I modded the Penguin 350 by cutting the plastic on the impeller housing and taping the lid on, and then modded the 400s too. I have since sold all of the filters. I started running the Aqueon 75s on the tanks, but now after about a year, they have become noisy as well. In the past few months I was able to pick up an old Emperor 400, beat up like heck too, and after a good cleaning, it runs like new again - and quiet.

This issue doesn't only affect these filters in the company either. I bought a 10 gallon Marineland kit (it was on sale) for a QT tank. It came with a Penguin 100. After setting it up we noticed right away the noise again. A trip to a LFS that sells used equipment and another old Penguin 170 later, and the tank was quiet again.

Since this happened I have been searching for some HOB filters for my two 75g tanks that aren't in a place to run canisters since they have the (now) noisy Aqueon filters on them. I have been looking at the AC 110 for a long time, but until the sale recently (plus a bit of tax return money), I haven't been able to afford them until now.

I have both but I have the AC500 that is now called the 110 same thing tho I ran this and a emp400 on my 75 gal....I use playsand and have oscars so....sand got in both...impellar bar in the ac grinded to a needle lol......got a replacement now I have to replace the motor because the other half is suck in there...but this filter has ran quite some time for me and I am firmly behind the aquaclears vs. The marinlands emp 400 altho I do like the extra compartment containers and the spray bars w the bio wheels....however...they get clogged to fast for messy fish and the rubber ends on this impellar rotted away from heat friction I beleave(sand)....the emp400 was very quiet when I first used it but towards the end it became louder and louder...most of these problems caused to the filters are my own fault due to playsand so really my comments are irrelevant..lol anyways I just went the BEST route with extremely messy fish that produce massive bio loads..that is....A SUMP lol fyi recommended even for a tank even as small as 30gals
