Building My 1000 Gallon Plywood Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your build looks great, and I'm happy to see you used fiberglass reinforcements - it probably wouldn't have held water at all without it. Loving the height of it - but I wouldn't wanna be the guy who had to clean your gravel!

Something I'd encourage you to read is this: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...11-Epoxy-Sealant-on-Plywood-a-cautionary-tale <- basically shows what straight epoxy sealant on plywood looks like after a few years in service. You might not have the same issue but I'd suggest draining most of the water and climbing in to have a real close look once a year or so to make sure this isn't happening to you.

thanks for the link, yea ive thought about painting it with liquid rubber for added protection, i might end up doing it either now or if i see anything wrong with it in the future.

For what it's worth I've changed my mind on liquid rubber products after reading nolapete's saga of difficulties with it. They work for many people but I'm not sure it's the miracle solution I thought it was. When I repair the tank shown in that thread I'm planning on using woven glass reinforcement with epoxy resin. I would prefer to use polyester resin but it will not bond to the epoxy that its already there, so it's not much of an option.

well the whole tank is already covered with woven cloth and epoxy resin. I was just thinking of using liquid rubber for an extra layer of protection in case there's cracks but right now the epoxy and cloth looks really strong. Only thing is if you have any flexing or movement it will crack. I hopefully wont ever need to move that thing it weighs about 2000 pounds without water.

How's that background coming along? The tank looks awesome BTW.

thanks but i probably wont be able to put the background in for a few weeks. Im going on vacation soon and have alot of other stuff goin on right now so hopefully it will be done in middle of march.

Well my tank was still holding water after 3 years of service. It had no cloth in the seams. Your build looks extremely solid and my intent was not to worry you - just something to be aware of, particularly given your tank is so tall. It does look great as-is. Another thing I decided I didn't like about LR is that once you put it on, that's it. You are out of options for other coatings unless you re-sheath the tank, or go with a liner or something. At least with "hard" coatings like epoxy or polyester, you can sand and put something over top if you want to (like something with fiber reinforcement).

Anyway, great build and I'm looking forward to the progress as much as everyone else is!

cvermeulen... still kickin around huh :P

I fell off the face of the earth for a while... then my LFS brought in some RTCxTSNs by mistake... :p

So I havent posted anything in a while because ive been really busy. I went on a vacation and ive been working on finishing the basement so i put off working on the tank for a while.

I started working on it a couple weeks ago and it is almost finished. I wanted something different so tell me what you guys think.
Heres some pics.

This is it with the lights on.

Everything was carved by hand and is custom made. At the end i painted everything with clear coat of clearwater epoxy to protect everything.
The next step is to wait for everything to cure and fill it up with water.

I can see that you have some unknown skills, and the octopussy and everything looks nice. But for me, that thing in there ruins the tank, just a personal matter thing tho.. It takes the focus away from the fish, as you will automaticaly look at that octopussy.. Looking forward to stocking and filtration pics :)
