New Concrete Tank Build - planning and research stage

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The outside parameter will be very thick but as for the center of the floor, 4" is fine but if you feel like your ever going to store a backhoe of 18 wheeler then go 6". Ill post a picture of a floating slab garage I did this morning (yes I took a picture of it just to post on here lol)

Well, I'm going to be "storing" a 6500 gallon tank at 52000 pounds of water! I think I will be going with 6" thick Fibermesh :headbang2

Thanks for the pic :) hopefully I have similar pics up here soon!

Hey Egon I played around with that google sketch a little bit but I didn't have much luck. On the tanks that I built we formed a depression all the way around the window blockout for the acrylic to sit in. I didn't install the window itself but yes it was sealed to the concrete after it was coated. There's lots of concrete epoxys available, google concrete counter tops and you should be able to find lots of products. If it was me I would have the garage floor built with an extra footing where the walls will be then when the time comes poor a floating slab on top with the wall rebar sticking out. If you did it this way you could do one monolithic poor and do the walls and bottom all at once.

I'm leaning towards this type of tank for a couple reasons.
1) - I may not install the tank right away. The garage first then the next year hopefully the tank. If something happens (life) then I can sell the house with the garage and it's no big deal. If I wait 5 years to build the tank darn I have all this garage space lol
2) - I think if I pour the tank/floor separate and all one pour it will be stronger and last longer without issues. Basically I want to do exactly what a public aquarium would - if possible of course.
3) - I think the tank would be removable/slightly more removable at least, than a tank that was using the garage floor as the tank bottom. Someday I may move or rent and sale price/weirdness might be impacted with a 7 thousand gallon fish tank in the garage.

Next big question is how do I find a concrete fish tank builder in the AZ area? This is a year away so not a burning hot question right now LOL

I just want to make sure the garage floor will support this monster!

I was too busy to snag a picture of the finished floor. Fiber mesh is a type of concrete. They put bags of fiber into the truck and mix it. It looks like the concrete has a million little hairs in it. you can use it with or without wire. And makes the concrete stronger then rebar. As for the finish, you don't need to worry about getting an awesome finish because the smoother it is, it gets slippery. People always ask me to fix their garage floor because they have wiped out too many times

I wouldn't use a fiber mix for a garage floor maybe a drive way and there is no way it's stronger than a rebar re-inforced floor.
