talking about cryptids, what do you think about the Ennedi tiger? The Ennedi mountains are located in the chad and beside the fact they they were most likely the anciant spring of the amazon river they have a long history to preserve animals thought to be long extinct. One example are the last nile crocodiles living there direct in the Sahara. They are the last remaining there. They are smaller than their cousens in central africa because the genetic isolation. The Ennedi mountains also were the home of the last lions in the Sahara. But there seems to be another big cat. The locals say its bigger than a lion, has a short tail and massive canines. What you say about that?

Are you saying that the Amazon River started in Chad? Any sources to back this up? :nilly:

The amazon and Congo regions were linked prehistorically.. ever wondered why SA's coastline and the african coastline fit together like a gigantic puzzle?

yes, the amazon originated in the chad and once watered into the pacific. as south america and africa divided the amazon was cut off from its original spring area and went dry. The ocean flooded the amazonian river bed. Then the andes montains started to rise and cut of the amazonian river bassin from the ocean, the flow direction changed and the amazon watered in the atlantic now. Many marine species were trapped in the amazon now and adapted to freshwater...one example are the potamotrygon rays.

Any sources to back up the Ennedi mountains as being the original source of the Amazon?

Since I don't have access to that book, I'll take your word for it that the author believes the Ennedi Mountains to be the "ancient spring of the Amazon River". The ideas that Africa and South America were contiguous and that the Amazon has changed it flow from West to East are widely accepted theories. However, I haven't been able to find any published papers alleging a specific point of origin. Does the book (I assume it is a book?) you cited give reasons as to why the author(s) believe the Ennedi Mountains are the original source of the river?

Interesting theory, I would just like to see some factual evidence.

As far as the whole cryptid thing, it makes for some good children's fiction...

it is believed that the anciant amazon had its origin in africa. The unkommon riverbed and form of the amazon river bassin indicate that. The ennedi mountains are the only mountains in an areas that could be the origin of the anciant amazon river. it is a theory accepted from many geologists. as i said "most likely". what is your theory about it. I lve those things and would like to hear other ideas

First off, let me apologize for the derail.

The reason I am so dubious is that the "true source" of the Amazon River has been "discovered" countless times over the last century. Because of the nature of river formation, the "source" or , more accurately, the "uppermost reaches" of a river may change location greatly over the course of that river's existence. The Amazon has undoubtedly had hundreds of different sources over its "lifetime". Considering the tectonic, volcanic, and erosional forces that have been in play over the millions years since the continents have separated it seems unlikely that the origin of the Amazon will ever be known with even a small degree of certainty.

I agree that it is an interesting topic, but I am very skeptical as well.
