So: I have a 400ish gallon pond that is currently stockless due to an escapee turtle that I'd had since I was 5 years old, but, I digress. To restock the pond, I am just going to do fish because I couldn't really replace my turtle. I am not comfortable stocking it with a large group of koi due to it's size, but I would really love to have a koi or two because they really are beautiful.

Can I stock with 1-3 koi and fill in with goldfish? How many koi? What kind of goldfish would be the best koi companions?

I agree, avoid koi in a pond that small. I have a 350ish gallon pond and have assorted goldfish in there and love it. I prefer koi but they just get too big for ponds our size and if properly cared for will outgrow it in very short order.

That doesn't mean it's good for the.koi. I have 3 and a mirror carp and plan on adding maximum 1 more carp and 2 koi, which is already considered overstocked.. My pond is alot bigger than yours by the way ;)

You can do shubunkins. They are just as pretty if not prettier than some koi.

Here is a shubunkin I have/had that I can't find and he might have been eaten. They are really pretty

Hm I dunno, they eat fine, they swim fine, they show amazing colors, they seem to enjoy life. But do enlighten me, how do I tell that it's not good for the koi?

So I couldn't even have 1 koi and a bunch of goldfish to fill in? Kind of disappointing. You see, I would like a fish that is kind of... personable? And goldfish really just aren't.
