The smallest species of alligator is the chinese alligator. Adults range from 4.5ft for females and 7ft for males. If you were able to get a specimen of this endangered species, you'd need a huge tank to keep it healthy and clean.

The smallest crocodilean species is the dwarf crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis) from Africa. This species tops out at 5ft in length. Still going to require a huge aquarium to keep a single specimen clean and healthy.

Maybe you should look at a crocodile lizard or a species of water monitor.

Just get yourself a croc skink- way cool looking and very easy to care for.

If you are wanting to keep a small crocodilian but do not know what species to look at then you are not ready. If you do a bunch of research take a look at the dwarf caimans but keep in mind that they are VERY nasty tempered and still need a sizable enclosure.

I have a dwarf caiman and it's the exact same thing as a crocodile or alligator it just doesn't get nearly as big. Look into those.

I don't think the OP is ready for these crocodilians (regardless of what species) yet. Alligator skinks would be excellent choice.

With dwarf caiman, you're still looking at 4ft for females and 5ft for males. Only now you have to add in a really nasty disposition and the fact that caiman are more nocturnal in nature than the species listed above

The smallest of gator, oddball has it right is the chinese. Gl getting one though. They are on my list to get eventually though. Smallest crocadilian would be cuviers dwarf(females 4ft, males 5ft) with schnieders dwarf next(4.5 to 5ft females, and with a RARE max size of nearly 7ft for males but realistically 5.5ft males). I have the later. The attitude is horrible and take up alot of space. West african dwarfs are also pretty small but even worse attitude.

Mine is the link above. Truly not something for everyone. I suggest spending a year at least researching them to truly understand what you are getting into. They are a life long commitment.
